The Shire of Lowan was a Local government in Australia, local government area in the Wimmera region of western Victoria (Australia), Victoria, Australia. The shire covered an area of , and existed from 1875 until 1995. History Lowan was originally part of the Shire of Wimmera, which was incorporated in 1862. On 31 December 1875, Lowan became a shire in its own right. Several parts of the shire split away in its first 20 years; * the Shire of Dimboola severed from Lowan and incorporated on 2 April 1885; * the West Riding was severed to form the Shire of Kaniva, Shire of Lawloit (Kaniva) on 29 May 1891; * the South Riding was severed to form the Shire of Kowree on 29 May 1894. Wimmera
The Wimmera is a region of the Australian state of Victoria. The district is located within parts of the Loddon Mallee and the Grampians regions; and covers the dryland farming area south of the range of Mallee scrub, east of the South Australia border and north of the Great Dividing Range. It can also be defined as the land within the social catchment of Horsham, its main settlement. Most of the Wimmera is very flat, with only the Grampians and Mount Arapiles rising above vast plains and the low plateaux that form the Great Divide in this part of Victoria. The Grampians are very rugged and tilted, with many sheer sandstone cliffs on their eastern sides, but gentle slopes on the west. The Shire of Hindmarsh is a local government area in Victoria, Australia, located in the western part of the state. It covers an area of and in June 2018 had a population of 5,645, having fallen from 5,852 in June 2013. It includes the towns of Dimboola, Nhill, Rainbow and Jeparit. It was formed in 1995 from the amalgamation of the Shire of Lowan and Shire of Dimboola. Kaniva
Kaniva is a town in Victoria, Australia. It is located on the Western Highway, north of Little Desert National Park, in the Shire of West Wimmera local government area. It is located roughly east of the South Australian border and east of Bordertown. At the 2016 census, Kaniva had a population of 803. The town is commonly used as a rest point for those travelling between Melbourne and Adelaide. The Kaniva region has some rare flora and fauna. The Shire of Wimmera was a local government area in the Wimmera region of western Victoria, Australia. The municipality covered an area of , and existed from 1862 until 1995. Although its shire offices were located in Horsham, Horsham itself was governed by a separate council after it succeeded in 1882. History The Wimmera road district was incorporated on 3 March 1862, and this district became a shire on 4 March 1864.
