The Shire of Wangaratta was a local government area about northeast of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The shire covered an area of , and existed from 1863 until 1994. The Shire did not include Wangaratta itself, which was governed by a separate local government. History Wangaratta was first incorporated as the North Ovens Road District on 10 June 1863, which became a shire on 17 September 1867. Part of the Mokoan Riding of the Shire of Benalla was annexed as the Killawarra Riding on 31 May 1906. The shire was renamed Wangaratta on 22 November 1916. The Hume is an economic rural region located in the north-eastern part of Victoria, Australia. Comprising an area in excess of with a population that ranges from (in 2011) to (in 2012), the Hume region includes the local government areas of Alpine Shire, Rural City of Benalla, City of Wodonga, City of Greater Shepparton, Shire of Indigo, Shire of Mansfield, Shire of Strathbogie, Shire of Towong and the Rural City of Wangaratta, and also includes five unincorporated areas encompassing the alpine ski resorts in the region. The Hume region is located along the two major interstate transport corridors – the Hume corridor and the Goulburn Valley corridor. Springhurst is a town in north-eastern Victoria, Australia. The town is in the Rural City of Wangaratta local government area, north east of the state capital. At the , Springhurst and the surrounding area had a population of 348. Peechelba, Victoria
Peechelba is a town in north eastern Victoria, Australia. The town is located in the Rural City of Wangaratta and the Shire of Moira local government area between Wangaratta and Yarrawonga and north west of the state capital, Melbourne. At the , Peechelba and the surrounding area had a population of 345. The town is home to a nature reserve, not far from the Ovens River. History Peechelba Post Office opened on 2 September 1880 to the north of the township now, and was renamed Bundalong South in 1883 when a new Peechelba office opened. This closed in 1889. In 1890 Peechelba Town office opened, closing in 1969. To serve soldier settlers in the area, a branch railway was opened to Peechelba East on 31 October 1927, from Bowser station on the main North East railway line. Eldorado, or El Dorado, is a small town in the north-east of Victoria, Australia. At the 2016 census, Eldorado had a population of 264, down from a population of 287 at the time of the 2006 census. History Eldorado was named after the legend of El Dorado in 1840 by William Baker, the name he used for his run. Even though the name refers to a land abounding in gold there was no gold found in Eldorado until the 1850s when it became a thriving gold rush town. Eldorado Post Office opened on 1 August 1861. The town's population declined sharply after the area ceased to yield gold. The remains of an old gold dredge can still be seen today. This is a large steel dredge which was designed and built by Thompson's Engineering for the Cocks Eldorado Gold Dredging Company in 1935–36. The Rural City of Wangaratta is a local government area in the Hume region of Victoria, Australia, located in the north-east part of the state. It covers an area of and, in June 2018, had a population of 29,087.
