Shinyanga Region
__NOTOC__ Shinyanga Region (''Mkoa wa Shinyanga'' in Swahili) is one of Tanzania's 31 administrative regions. The regional capital is the municipality of Shinyanga. The region is bordered to the north by the Mwanza, Mara, and Kagera Regions and to the south by the Tabora Region. Kigoma Region borders to the west, and the Simiyu Region to the east. Demographics In 2016 the Tanzania National Bureau of Statistics report there were 1,666,554 people in the region, from 1,534,808 in 2012.. For 2002–2012, the region's 2.1 percent average annual population growth rate was the twentieth highest in the country. It was also the tenth most densely populated region with 81 people per square kilometer. With a size of , the region is slightly smaller than Costa Rica (). As of 2021,there are 31 regions of Tanzania which are divided into 184 districts (Swahili: wilaya). In 2016, Songwe Region was created from the western part of Mbeya Region. The districts are each administered by a district council. Cities are separately administered by their own councils, and while administratively within a region, are not considered to be located within a district. Steven Kanumba
Steven Charles Kanumba (8 January 1984 – 7 April 2012) was a Tanzanian actor and director of Sukuma heritage, born in Shinyanga Region. Kanumba died in 2012 at the age of 28, for which actress Elizabeth Michael was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced two years in prison in November 2017. Over 30,000 people were estimated to have attended his funeral. He was described as "Tanzania's most popular film star", and appeared in Nollywood films. Early life Kanumba was born into a Sukuma family in the Shinyanga Region in Northern Tanzania. His father was Charles Kanumba and his mother was Flora Mutegoa. Kanumba had three older sisters. Nyamwezi People
The Nyamwezi, or ''Wanyamwezi'', are one of the Bantu groups of East Africa. They are the second-largest ethnic group in Tanzania. The Nyamwezi people's ancestral homeland is in parts of Tabora Region, Singida Region, Shinyanga Region and Katavi Region. The term ''Nyamwezi'' is of Swahili origin, and translates as "people of the moon" on one hand but also means "people of the west" the latter being more meaningful to the context. Historically, there have been five ethnic groups, all referring to themselves as 'Wanyamwezi' to outsiders: Kimbu, Konongo, Nyamwezi, Sukuma, and Sumbwa, who were never united. All groups normally merged have broadly similar cultures, although it is an oversimplification to view them as a single group. Sukuma People
The Sukuma are a Bantu ethnic group from the southeastern African Great Lakes region. They are the largest ethnic group in Tanzania, with an estimated 10 million members or 16 percent of the country's total population. Sukuma means "north" and refers to "people of the north." The Sukuma refer to themselves as ''Wasukuma'' (plural) and Msukuma (singular). Homeland The Sukuma live in northwestern Tanzania on or near the southern shores of Lake Victoria, and various areas of the administrative districts of the Mwanza, southwestern tip of Mara Region, Simiyu Region and Shinyanga Region. Kahama Rural District
Kahama Rural District is one of the five districts of the Shinyanga Region of Tanzania. Its administrative centre is the town of Kahama. The district consists of two separate parts, divided by Kahama Urban District. The area to the northeast is Msalala District, while the part to the southwest is Ushetu Council. According to the 2012 Tanzania National Census, the population of the Kahama Rural District was 523,802. Ushetu District is a district council in the Shinyanga Region of Tanzania's lake zone established in 2012. The district lies in west most portion of the region just south and west of the town of Kahama. History The district was created on 23 November 2012 by splitting the Kahama District into one new town council of Kahama Municipality, and two new district councils of Msalala District and Ushetu District.
