Sherburne is a ghost town located in Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana, Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana, United States in the Atchafalaya National Wildlife Refuge. Overview Sherburne was founded as a logging camp and sawmill town in the 1880s on the Atchafalaya River in the Atchafalaya Basin using the abundant trees in the region. It is unknown how many residents there were and the town was abandoned in the early 1900s. By the 1930s the town was permanently abandoned. Pointe Coupee Parish ( or ; french: Paroisse de la Pointe-Coupée) is a parish located in the U.S. state of Louisiana. As of the 2010 census, the population was 22,802; in 2020, its population was 20,758. The parish seat is New Roads. Pointe Coupee Parish is part of the Baton Rouge, Louisiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 2010, the center of population of Louisiana was located in Pointe Coupee Parish, in the city of New Roads. History Point Coupee is the oldest settlement on the lower Mississippi, having been made by some wandering Canadian trappers as early as 1708. Atchafalaya National Wildlife Refuge
The Atchafalaya National Wildlife Refuge is located about west of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and one mile (1.6 km) east of Krotz Springs, Louisiana, lies just east of the Atchafalaya River. In 1988 under the administration of Governor Foster the "Atchafalaya Basin Master Plan" was implemented that combined the Sherburne Wildlife Management Area (WMA), the Atchafalaya National Wildlife Refuge, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Bayou Des Ourses (Bayou of the Bears) into the Sherburne Complex Wildlife Management Area. The Atchafalaya Basin, or Atchafalaya Swamp (; Louisiana French: ''L'Atchafalaya'', ), is the largest wetland and swamp in the United States. Located in south central Louisiana, it is a combination of wetlands and river delta area where the Atchafalaya River and the Gulf of Mexico converge. The river stretches from near Simmesport, Louisiana, Simmesport in the north through parts of eight County (United States), parishes to the Morgan City, Louisiana, Morgan City southern area. The Atchafalaya is different among Louisiana basins because it has a growing delta system (''see illustration'') with wetlands that are almost stable.
