Shepparton Football Club
The Shepparton Football Netball Club, nicknamed the ''Bears'', is an Australian rules football and netball club in the Goulburn Valley Football League. The Shepparton Bears, a local football team, play their home games at Deakin Reserve, Shepparton's premier football ground. The Bears, once known as the Maroons, are based in Shepparton. They share the ground with the Shepparton United Football Club. History Competitive football began in the Shepparton region in the 1880s, but it wasn't until the formation of the Goulburn Valley District Football Association in 1894 that a formal structure for the sport was established. The Association provided a framework for teams to compete in a league, with a coherent set of rules and regulations. Shepparton was one of six founder members of the Goulburn Valley District Football Association (GVDFA). The Goulburn Valley Football Netball League is an Australian rules football and netball competition based in the Goulburn Valley region of Victoria, Australia. It is a member of the Victorian Country Football League and has won the Victorian Country Football Championships in 2003 and 2005. History The league was initially called the Goulburn Valley District Football Association(GVDFA) and dates back to May, 1893. Clubs from the townships of Kyabram, Mooroopna, Nagambie, Nathalia, Numurkah, Shepparton, Shepparton Ramblers, Tatura, Undera and Wunghnu were present at the inaugural meeting. The Goulburn Valley Football Association (GVFA) is an Australian rules football competition that was first established in 1888 in the Goulburn Valley of Victoria, Australia, with the foundation clubs being Cobram, Muckatah, Nathalia, Numurkah, Wunghnu and Yarroweyah. This football competition was separate to the Goulburn Valley District Football Association that was formed in 1893, that is still active today and now called the Goulburn Valley Football League. Jordon Butts (born 31 December 1999) is an Australian rules footballer who plays for the Adelaide Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). He was recruited by the Adelaide Football Club with the 39th draft pick in the 2019 rookie draft. He is the son of former player Gerard Butts. Early football Butts played for the Shepparton Football Club in the Goulburn Valley Football Netball League, where he played 3 games, one of them a premiership victory. Will Brodie (born 23 August 1998) is a professional Australian rules footballer playing for the Fremantle Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL), having been initially drafted to the Gold Coast Suns. Early career He grew up in Shepparton before accepting a scholarship to attend Scotch College in Melbourne. He was drafted by Gold Coast with their third selection and ninth overall in the 2016 national draft. Shannon Byrnes (born 7 April 1984) is a former Australian rules footballer who last played for the Melbourne Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL) after a ten-year career with the Geelong Football Club. He is currently a development manager at the Geelong Cats Football Club. Career Byrnes was recruited from the Murray Bushrangers and was the last draftee selected by the Geelong Football Club in the AFL rookie draft in 2002.
