Shepherdswell
Shepherdswell (also Sibertswold) is a village in the civil parish of Shepherdswell with Coldred, and the Dover District of Kent, England. Culture and community Village social life centres on the local Grade I listed church 'Church of St Andrew', and the village hall which is hosts events including charity jumble sales and a pre-school playgroup. The village pub is the Grade II listed Bell by the village green, near to the church. Additionally the village has a Co-op mini-supermarket. Shepherdswell is significant for the East Kent Railway, whose terminus is sited there. This was originally one of Colonel Stephens's lines and ran to Wingham. The section as far as Eythorne is now run by a preservation society. It has a mainline railway station named Shepherds Well with direct trains to Dover and London via Faversham. Shepherdswell With Coldred
Shepherdswell with Coldred is a civil parish in the Dover District of Kent, England. The parish contains the villages of Shepherdswell and Coldred, apart, and the hamlet of Coxhill just south-west of Shepherdswell. Shepherdswell with Coldred is approximately east from the county town of Maidstone. The south of the parish is approximately north-west from the channel port of Dover, and the north, south-east from Canterbury. A section of the major A2 London to Dover road runs through the parish at the south-west. Apart from this road, all others within the parish are minor and unnumbered. The National Rail mainline from London to Dover runs through the parish, partly by tunnel. East Kent Railway (heritage)
The East Kent Railway (EKR) is a heritage railway in Kent, England. It is located at Shepherdswell station on the London and Chatham to Dover mainline. The line was constructed between 1911 and 1917 to serve the Kent Coalfields. See East Kent Light Railway for details of the original lines. The Kent Collieries were mostly a failure with only Tilmanstone on the line producing any viable commercial coal and commercial traffic over the line. The line is operated by heritage diesel locomotives. It is home to a collection of heritage diesel locomotives, Diesel Multiple Units DMU, DEMU and electric multiple units including an in service British Rail Class 404 built in the 1930s. At Shepherdswell, there is a cafe, a large woodland area with walking routes, a gauge miniature railway, a gauge woodland miniature railway, a model railway and a small museum. Shepherds Well Railway Station
Shepherds Well railway station is on the Dover branch of the Chatham Main Line in England, and serves the village of Shepherdswell, Kent. It is down the line from and is situated between and . The station and all trains that serve the station are operated by Southeastern. It appears in the timetable and online enquiry systems as "Shepherds Well" but the platform signs read "Shepherdswell". It is adjacent to the terminus of the East Kent heritage line, which is spelt as one word: Shepherdswell. The booking office in the station building on the country-bound platform is open only for very limited hours on Mondays to Fridays mornings but a Permit To Travel ticket machine (also on the country-bound platform) caters for out-of-hours ticketing. Miner's Way Trail
The Miner's Way Trail is a long-distance circular footpath in England, starting at Sholden, Kent. Linking up the coalfield parishes of East Kent. Including; the parishes of Deal, Ash, Aylesham, Chillenden, Eastry, Eythorne, Elvington, Goodnestone, Nonington, Northbourne, Coldred, Staple, Tilmanstone and Wingham. The trail is approximately in length. A link route creates two shorter walks of around 14 miles each. The Waymark for the trail is a white circle with a Miners lamp, train and leaf. A Cycle Trail also follows most of the trail, starting and finishing at Deal. Sections of the cycling route follow the existing Sustrans National Cycle Network Regional Route 16 (Dover to Canterbury, via Adisham) also and connects with Regional Route 17 (to Sandwich). North Downs Way
The North Downs Way National Trail is a long-distance path in southern England, opened in 1978. It runs from Farnham to Dover, past Guildford, Dorking, Merstham, Otford and Rochester, along the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and Kent Downs AONB. History Planning for a new Long Distance Path, as they were classified in 1949, began in Kent in 1950. After an extensive survey, it was agreed that a route on "a line which offers the best scenic qualities for the walker" along the ridge of the North Downs, rather than the Pilgrim's Way (which even in the 1960s was predominantly metalled road), was preferred. Working alongside Surrey County Council, plans were eventually submitted in 1966. Dover () is a town and major ferry port in Kent, South East England. It faces France across the Strait of Dover, the narrowest part of the English Channel at from Cap Gris Nez in France.
