Sheldon Boright House
The Sheldon Boright House, also known as the Grey Gables, is a historic house at 122 River Street in Richford, Vermont. Built in 1890 for a prominent local businessman, it is a fine example of a pattern-book design by Palliser, Palliser & Company, and may be the only instance of a house found on the cover of one of that company's pattern books. Now a bed and breakfast inn, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. Description and history The Sheldon Boright House stands on the west side of Richford's town center, overlooking the Missisquoi River from the north side of River Street. It is a distinctive -story wood-frame structure with elaborate Queen Anne styling. Its asymmetrical massing is covered by a multicolored slate roof that features iron cresting and numerous gables. Richford, Vermont
Richford is a town in Franklin County, Vermont, United States, located along the Canada–United States border. The population was 2,346 at the 2020 census. Richford is the birthplace of R. G. LeTourneau, an industrialist who founded LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas. Richford is the eastern terminus of the Missisquoi Valley Rail-Trail. Geography Richford is located in the northeast corner of Franklin County, bordered to the north by the Brome-Missisquoi Regional County Municipality in the Montérégie region of Quebec in Canada. Orleans County, Vermont, is to the east. Richford, the primary community, is in the northwest part of the town along the Missisquoi River. Vermont Route 105 passes through the center of town, leading east across the Green Mountains to North Troy and southwest to Enosburg Falls. Palliser, Palliser & Company
Palliser, Palliser & Company was a Bridgeport, Connecticut, and New York City architectural firm and publisher of architectural pattern books. George Palliser, the firm's founder, was born around 1849 in Thirsk, Yorkshire, England. He emigrated to Newark, New Jersey in 1868. He worked as a carpenter and builder, later opening a millwork business. In search of new territory, Palliser moved to Bridgeport in 1873, opening an architectural office. He would specialize in residential work. In 1877 he made his brother, Charles Palliser, a partner in the firm, which became Palliser, Palliser & Company. They remained in Bridgeport until 1882, when increasing business necessitated a move to New York. The Pallisers kept the Bridgeport office open as a branch through the 1880s, but would eventually close it in favor of the New York office. Missisquoi River
The Missisquoi River is a transboundary river of the east shore of Lake Champlain (via Missisquoi Bay), approximately long, in northern Vermont in the United States and southern Quebec in Canada. It drains a rural area of the northern Green Mountains along the Canada–US border northeast of Lake Champlain, and an area of Quebec's Eastern Townships. The South Branch rises in Vermont and runs generally from southeast to northwest; the North Branch rises in Lake d'Argent in Eastman, Quebec, and runs from north to south. The North Branch and the South Branch join at Highwater, Quebec, just downriver from North Troy, Vermont.
