Shelby Lyman
Shelbourne Richard Lyman (October 22, 1936 – August 11, 2019) was an American chess player and teacher known for hosting a live broadcast of the 1972 World Chess Championship for the PBS television station Channel 13 in New York. This broadcast became the highest-rated public television program ever at that time, far surpassing viewership expectations. Shelby Lyman was born in Brooklyn, New York but grew up in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. He was a graduate of the Boston Latin School and Harvard University who after graduation taught sociology at the City College of New York for three and a half years. Shortly after the 1972 World Championship ended, he began writing a syndicated column about chess for '' Newsday''; at its peak, this column was published in 82 newspapers around the world. Brooklyn Jewish Hospital
The Brooklyn Jewish Hospital and Medical Center was an academic, sectarian hospital in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, Crown Heights and Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, Prospect Heights in Central Brooklyn. It merged with St. John's Episcopal Hospital to form Interfaith Medical Center in 1983. History Early days The hospital's predecessor was the Brooklyn Hebrew Hospital Society, which formed in 1895 as a clinic; they served as a small dispensary and were located at 70 Johnson Street. that grew to serve the burgeoning populations of Crown Heights and Prospect Heights. Marshall Chess Club
The Marshall Chess Club, in Greenwich Village, New York City, is one of the oldest chess clubs in the United States. The club was formed in 1915 by a group of players led by Frank Marshall. It is a nonprofit organization and a gold affiliate of the United States Chess Federation. History The Marshall Chess Club was a long-time rival of the Manhattan Chess Club, a club which existed from 1877 to 2002. The Marshall Chess Club met in several temporary homes until it moved permanently to 23 West Tenth Street in 1931. The club occupies two floors of a townhouse at that address and owns the building.
