Sheeba
Sheeba were an all-girl pop trio popular in Ireland in the late 1970s and early 1980s. They were Maxi, Marion Fossett and Frances Campbell. They are best known for representing the host nation, Ireland, in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1981 with "Horoscopes". Career In 1978, the group took part in the Irish National Song Contest, to select Ireland's entry for that year's Eurovision Song Contest. But they failed to win with their song, "It's Amazing What Love Can Do". They went on to release several singles in Ireland with producer Roberto Danova, although their biggest hit was "Horoscopes", which reached No.3. Following their exposure in the 1981 contest, they signed a recording contract in the UK and released the singles "The Next Night" and "Mystery", neither of these found success although were performed on UK TV shows such as 'Lena' (BBC2) and 'The UK Disco Dancing Championships' (ITV.) Horoscopes (song)
Ireland was represented by the female trio Sheeba in the Eurovision Song Contest 1981 with the song "Horoscopes", written by Joe Kelly and Jim Burkett. Before Eurovision The National Song Contest 1981 Competing entries Sheeba had previously appeared at the National finals in 1978, while member Maxi had performed for Ireland at the 1973 Eurovision finals. They were one of two female trios in the Contest - the other being The Duskey Sisters. Male/female groups were represented by opening act Tara and closing act Karen Black and The Nevada - the latter being a famous recording act in Ireland at the time under the line up of Roy Taylor, Karen Black and The Nevada. Maxi (born Irene McCoubrey, ) is a former musician and radio presenter in the Republic of Ireland. Maxi performed with two girl groups and the Irish supergroup The Concerned in the 1970s–80s, also representing Ireland at the 1973 and 1981 Eurovision Song Contests. After an automobile accident left her hospitalized, she focused on becoming a presenter for Raidió Teilifís Éireann; she retired from the broadcaster in 2015 after 30 years. The Eurovision Song Contest 1981 was the 26th edition of the annual Eurovision Song Contest. It took place in Dublin, Ireland, following the country's victory at the with the song "What's Another Year" by Johnny Logan. Organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and host broadcaster (RTÉ), the contest was held at the RDS Simmonscourt on 4 April 1981, and was hosted by Irish television journalist Doireann Ní Bhriain. Twenty countries participated in the contest, equalling the record of the 1978 edition. Cyprus made their début this year, while Israel and Yugoslavia both returned to the competition, after their one-year and five-year absences, respectively. Before Eurovision National final Eight finalists took part in the final on 14 March 1982 in Dublin, Ireland, with the winner being chosen by the votes of 11 regional juries. The winner of the Irish National Contest, The Duskeys, previously took part in the 1981 national final performing as 'The Duskey Sisters' tying 3rd with Tony Kenny, coming behind Karen Black and The Nevada, and winners Sheeba. ''Name That Tune'' is a British television game show that put two contestants against each other to test their knowledge of songs. Originating from the United States on NBC Radio in 1952, the show first aired on the ITV network in 1976. Tom O'Connor was the first presenter before Lionel Blair took over in 1984. History The British version began in 1956. Marion Ryan was the singer in the popular musical quiz '' Spot the Tune'' on Granada Television for seven years, with a total of 209 half-hour programmes. The Duskeys
The Duskeys was an Irish family pop group, known for their participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 1982 with the song "Here Today Gone Tomorrow". Background Formed after the break-up of Sandy Kelly's (real name Philomena Ellis) touring showband The Fairways, she recruited her sister Barbara Ellis and Welsh cousin Nina Duskey. In 1980, they released their debut single, "Don't Feel Like Dancing". In 1981 they competed in the Irish national finals for the 1981 Eurovision Song Contest with the song "Where Does That Love Come From" under the name The Duskey Sisters. They finished in third place. What's Another Year?
"What's Another Year" was Irish singer and composer Johnny Logan's first Eurovision Song Contest winning song, achieving success in the 1980 edition of the contest, as well as 's second Eurovision victory. Composed by Shay Healy (who also wrote "The Ultimate Country and Western Song" performed by Billy Connolly), the song reached number one in the UK Singles Chart for two weeks in May.
