Shea Heights
Shea Heights is a small neighborhood located in the hills of St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. History Shea Heights was originally settled outside of the city of St. John's in the 1930s. The community was originally called Blackhead Road, but changed its name to Shea Heights in order to honour a local priest. The community was added to the St. John's metropolitan region in the 1960s as part of the Canadian urban renewal project and fully integrated into St. John's in 1984. A $4.1 million renewal project in the 1960s, announced by Joey Smallwood, helped transform the Blackhead Road community. At the time, about 2,000 people lived in 336 "tiny shacks." A reservoir was also created as part of the project. The residents of the community used a National Film Board of Canada grant to help demonstrate the need for a sewerage system to the provincial government in 1973. Newfoundland
Newfoundland and Labrador (; french: Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador; frequently abbreviated as NL) is the easternmost province of Canada, in the country's Atlantic region. The province comprises the island of Newfoundland and the continental region of Labrador, having a total size of 405,212 square kilometres (156,500 sq mi). In 2021, the population of Newfoundland and Labrador was estimated to be 521,758. Joey Smallwood
Joseph Roberts Smallwood (December 24, 1900 – December 17, 1991) was a Newfoundlander and Canadian politician. He was the main force who brought the Dominion of Newfoundland into Canadian Confederation in 1949, becoming the first premier of Newfoundland, serving until 1972. As premier, he vigorously promoted economic development, championed the welfare state, and emphasized modernization of education and transportation. The results of his efforts to promote industrialization were mixed, with the most favourable results in hydroelectricity, iron mining and paper mills. Smallwood was charismatic and controversial. While many Canadians today remember Smallwood as the man who brought Newfoundland into Canada, the opinions held by Newfoundlanders and their diaspora remain sharply divided as to his legacy. Hurricane Gabrielle
The name Gabrielle has been used for nine tropical cyclones worldwide, six in the Atlantic Ocean, one in the South-West Indian Ocean and two in the Australian region. Donnie Dumphy
Donnie Dumphy is a fictional character portrayed by Leon Parsons and created by Leon Parsons and Nik Sexton. Sexton produced skateboard videos in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador and interspersed humorous skits of Donnie, in the role of a "skeet" (Newfoundland stereotype of a lower-class man) into the footage. After a positive reaction from friends and coworkers, he developed the Dumphy character with Parsons and began posting videos on YouTube, calling the music "gib rap". Despite being an admitted "running joke", Sexton and Parson have produced a hip hop CD with the Donnie Dumphy persona and are actively working on a Dumphy film together. Dumphy and his girlfriend Brenda hosted the 2009 Grand Falls-Windsor, NL Salmon Festival, featuring headliner Akon and some 20,000 people in attendance. Harold Druken
Harold Druken (born January 26, 1979) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey centre. He was drafted 36th overall in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft by the Vancouver Canucks. He played for the Canucks, Carolina Hurricanes and Toronto Maple Leafs during his National Hockey League (NHL) career, and also played professionally in Switzerland for EHC Basel. Druken spent most of his professional career in the minor leagues with the American Hockey League (AHL) affiliates of the Canucks, Maple Leafs and Hurricanes. Playing career Druken played high school hockey in the US for Noble & Greenough School in Dedham, MA. Druken enjoyed a prolific three-year Ontario Hockey League (OHL) career, spent with the Detroit/Plymouth Whalers franchise, during which time he was named to the OHL All-Rookie Team in 1997 and OHL Second All-Star Team in 1999.
