Shant Harutyunyan
Shant Harutyunyan ( hy, Շանթ Հարությունյան, born February 3, 1965, in Yerevan) is an Armenian political and public activist. He was the leader of the ''Tseghakron'' party until 2004 and is the current leader of the United National Initiative party. Biography He is the son of Shahen Harutyunyan, the founder of National United Party (Armenia). Harutyunyan was arrested for campaign against the ideology of USSR, and he was freed during the Perestroika as he was recognized as a political prisoner. Since 1988 he participated in the Karabakh movement and the first Karabakh War. In 1997, he graduated from the Law Department of the Yerevan Hrachya Acharyan University. After March 1 riots he was arrested, then released. He was the only person who was set free after the March 1 riots before being kept in a mental house. Paruyr Arshaviri Hayrikyan (born July 5, 1949) is an Armenian politician and former Soviet dissident. He was an early member and leader of the National United Party (NUP), which sought Armenia's independence from the Soviet Union. He spent a total of about 18 years in Soviet correctional facilities for his dissident activities and was eventually expelled from the Soviet Union in 1988, although he was allowed to return two years later. Since Armenia gained its independence in 1991, Hayrikyan has been active in Armenian politics as the leader of the Union for National Self-Determination, the successor party to the NUP, and took part in presidential elections in 1991 and 2013, surviving an assassination attempt during the latter. 2013 Armenian Protests
Various political and civil groups staged anti-government protests in Armenia in 2013. The first series of protests were held following the 2013 presidential election and were led by the former presidential candidate Raffi Hovannisian. Hovannisian, who, according to official results, lost to incumbent Serzh Sargsyan, denounced the results claiming they were rigged. Starting on 19 February, Hovannisian and his supporters held mass rallies in Yerevan's Freedom Square and other cities. On 10 March, Hovannisian started a hunger strike, calling elected President Sargsyan to resign before 9 April, the inauguration day. Hovannisian called "for the solution of this unprecedented pan-national fundamental issue before April 9."
