Shanghai Ballet
The Shanghai Ballet Company is the state ballet company for Shanghai. This regional dance troupe organized in 1966 (though they did not settle on the name "Shanghai Ballet" until 1979). They perform a blend of traditional and Western dance styles. The troupe is particularly well known for their performances of ''The White Haired Girl''. History The troupe tours internationally. During the 1977 and the 1984 tours, members of the troupe defected, one in the US and one in Canada. The Shanghai Ballet was formally renamed in 1979 at the base of ''The White-haired Girl'' performing team, which won the Gold Medal of the Best Classical Dance Works of the 20th Century in China. In August 2013, the Company interpreted ''Jane Eyre'' for its first show ever in the UK, at the London Coliseum. The White Haired Girl
''The White-Haired Girl'' () is a Chinese opera, ballet, (later adapted to Beijing Opera and a film) by Yan Jinxuan to a Chinese libretto by He Jingzhi and Ding Yi. The folklore of the white-haired girl is believed to have spread widely in the areas occupied by the Communist Party of Northern China since the late 1930s. Many years later, a literary work was created in the liberated area controlled by the Chinese Communist Party in the late 1940s. The film was made in 1950 and the first Peking opera performance was in 1958. The first ballet performance was by Shanghai Dance Academy, Shanghai in 1965. It has also been performed by the noted soprano Guo Lanying. The opera is based on legends circulating in the border region of Shanxi, Chahar and Hebei, describing the misery suffered by local peasantry, particularly the misery of the female members. London Coliseum
The London Coliseum (also known as the Coliseum Theatre) is a theatre in St Martin's Lane, Westminster, built as one of London's largest and most luxurious "family" variety theatres. Opened on 24 December 1904 as the London Coliseum Theatre of Varieties, it was designed by the theatrical architect Frank Matcham for the impresario Oswald Stoll. Their ambition was to build the largest and finest music hall, described as the "people's palace of entertainment" of its age. At the time of construction, the Coliseum was one of the few theatres in Europe to provide lifts for taking patrons to the upper levels of the house, and was the first theatre in England to have a triple revolve installed on its stage. Pierre Lacotte
Pierre Lacotte (born 4 April 1932) is a French ballet dancer and choreographer who specialised in the reconstruction of lost choreographies of romantic ballets. His mother was an affirmed musician and he manifested very early his interest for dance. After an initial reluctance, his family surrendered to his stubbornness so that Lacotte could become a student of Gustave Ricaux, who taught at the Paris Opera. In 1946 he was engaged in the Paris Opera Ballet and in 1953 became a principal dancer. Among his teachers at the Paris Opera Ballet School where Lubov Egorova, Carlotta Zambelli and the choreographer Serge Lifar, who chose Paulette Dynalix, Claude Bessy and Lacotte as the three interpretive dancers of ''Septuor'', a single-act ballet presented in Paris on 25 January 1950. Zhenrong Chen
Chen Zhenrong (陳真榮) is a Chinese ballet dancer. He is a principal dancer for the Shanghai Ballet Company. Ballet Companies In China
A ballet company is a type of dance troupe which performs classical ballet, neoclassical ballet, and/or contemporary ballet in the European tradition, plus managerial and support staff. Most major ballet companies employ dancers on a year-round basis, except in the United States, where contracts for part of the year (typically thirty or forty weeks) are the norm. A company generally has a home theatre where it stages the majority of its performances, but many companies also tour in their home country or internationally. Ballet companies routinely make a loss at the box office, and depend on external financial support of one kind or another.
