Karaganda Region
Karaganda Region ( kk, Qarağandy oblysy; russian: Карагандинская область, translit=Karagandinskaja oblast′), also spelled Qaraghandy Region, is a region of Kazakhstan. Its capital is Karaganda. On 17 March 2022 it was announced that Karaganda would be divided, with the formation of the Ulytau Region. This officially came into force on 8 June 2022. History The region was the site of intense coal mining during the days of the Soviet Union and also the site of several Gulag forced labor camps. Following World War II, Joseph Stalin, leader of the Soviet Union, had many ethnic Germans deported to the area. There have been constant border changes within the region's history. The first took place in 1954 when it was ceded parts of Kustanay Oblast and parts of Taldy-Kurgan Oblast. Andreas Maurer (russian: Андреас Маурер; born 5 January 1970) is a German mail carrier and local politician (formerly CDU; formerly The Left) convicted of electoral fraud. Biography Andreas Maurer's mother Martha (née Boschmann, 1936–2020) was a miner born in a German colony in Ukraine, while his father Alexander (1928–1979) was a Volga German geologist. During the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union, Joseph Stalin abolished the Volga German Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. Maurer's family was deported to the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic. There, Andreas Maurer was born in 1970 in Shakhtinsk in the Karaganda Region. He was nine years old when his father passed away. In many countries, a mayor is the highest-ranking official in a municipal government such as that of a city or a town.
