Shakespeare Association Of America
The Shakespeare Association of America (SAA) is a non-profit organization founded in 1972 of professional and independent scholars for the advanced academic study of William Shakespeare's plays and poems and their cultural and theatrical contexts. The SAA hosts an annual conference each spring in a different US city. William Shakespeare
William Shakespeare ( 26 April 1564 – 23 April 1616) was an English playwright, poet and actor. He is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the " Bard of Avon" (or simply "the Bard"). His extant works, including collaborations, consist of some 39 plays, 154 sonnets, three long narrative poems, and a few other verses, some of uncertain authorship. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. Shakespeare's plays are a canon of approximately 39 dramatic works written by English poet, playwright, and actor William Shakespeare. The exact number of plays—as well as their classifications as Shakespearean tragedy, tragedy, Shakespearean history, history, Shakespearean comedy, comedy, or otherwise—is a matter of scholarly debate. Shakespeare In Performance
Thousands of performances of William Shakespeare's plays have been staged since the end of the 16th century. While Shakespeare was alive, many of his greatest plays were performed by the Lord Chamberlain's Men and King's Men acting companies at the Globe and Blackfriars Theatres. Among the actors of these original performances were Richard Burbage (who played the title role in the first performances of ''Hamlet'', '' Othello'', '' Richard III'' and ''King Lear''), Richard Cowley, and William Kempe. Arden Shakespeare
The Arden Shakespeare is a long-running series of scholarly editions of the works of William Shakespeare. It presents fully edited modern-spelling editions of the plays and poems, with lengthy introductions and full commentaries. There have been three distinct series of The Arden Shakespeare over the past century, with the third series commencing in 1995 and concluding in January 2020. Arden was the maiden name of Shakespeare's mother, Mary, but the primary reference of the enterprise's title is to the Forest of Arden, in which Shakespeare's ''As You Like It'' is set. David Bevington
David Martin Bevington (May 13, 1931 – August 2, 2019) was an American literary scholar. He was the Phyllis Fay Horton Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus in the Humanities and in English Language, English Language & Literature, Comparative Literature, and the college at the University of Chicago, where he taught since 1967, as well as chair of Theatre and Performance Studies. "One of the most learned and devoted of Shakespeareans," so called by Harold Bloom, he specialized in English drama, British drama of the English Renaissance, Renaissance, and edited and introduced the complete works of William Shakespeare in both the 29-volume, Random House, Bantam Classics paperback editions and the single-volume Longman edition. Gary Taylor (scholar)
Gary Taylor (born 1953) is an American academic, George Matthew Edgar Professor of English at Florida State University, author of numerous books and articles, and joint editor of ''The Oxford Shakespeare'' and '' The Oxford Middleton''. Life The first member of his family to graduate from high school, Taylor won scholarships that led to bachelor's degrees in English and Classics from the University of Kansas (1975) and to a doctorate in English from the University of Cambridge (1988). Gail Kern Paster (born 1944) is an American Shakespeare scholar, historian and writer. Life She was born on 8 November 1944. Paster graduated from North Shore High School (New York) in 1962. She received her bachelor's degree from Smith College and her PhD from Yale University. Career Paster taught at the George Washington University from 1974 to 2002. From 2002 to 2011, she was the director of the Folger Shakespeare Library. She has also served as editor of the Shakespeare Quarterly magazine. Margreta De Grazia
Margreta de Grazia (born 1946) is a scholar of Shakespeare, an Emerita Professor of English and the Humanities at the University of Pennsylvania. A Guggenheim Fellow, she is best known for her critical reappraisals of Shakespeare's oeuvre and her editions of the ''Cambridge Companion to Shakespeare'' and the ''New Cambridge Companion to Shakespeare''. Life Margreta de Grazia was born in 1946 to Sebastian de Grazia, one of his five children. She attended Bryn Mawr College, receiving her undergraduate degree in 1968.
