Shaare Shalom Synagogue
Kahal Kadosh Sha'are Shalom (''Holy Congregation of the Gates of Peace''), also known as the United Congregation of Israelites, is a historic synagogue in the city of Kingston on the island of Jamaica. History With the influx of Jews to Jamaica in the 17th century, multiple synagogues were constructed across the island in such cities as Montego Bay, Spanish Town, Port Royal, and Kingston. Originally, two synagogues were built in Spanish Town, the Sephardi ''K.K. Neveh Shalom'' ("Habitation of Peace") consecrated in 1704, and the Ashkenazi ''K.K. Mikveh Yisrael'' ("Hope of Israel") erected in 1796. These two congregations would later merge as Jews began to migrate from Spanish Town to Kingston, the new capital city. Kingston is the capital and largest city of Jamaica, located on the southeastern coast of the island. The history of the Jews in Latin America began with conversos who joined the Spanish and Portuguese expeditions to the continents. The Alhambra Decree of 1492 led to the mass conversion of Spain's Jews to Catholicism and the expulsion of those who refused to do so. However, the vast majority of Conversos never made it to the New World and remained in Spain slowly assimilating to the dominant Catholic culture. This was due to the requirement by Spain's Blood Statutes to provide written documentation of Old Christian lineage to travel to the New World. Rastafari, sometimes called Rastafarianism, is a religion that developed in Jamaica during the 1930s. It is classified as both a new religious movement and a social movement by scholars of religion. There is no central authority in control of the movement and much diversity exists among practitioners, who are known as Rastafari, Rastafarians, or Rastas. Rastafari beliefs are based on a specific interpretation of the Bible. Central is a monotheistic belief in a single God, referred to as Jah, who is deemed to partially reside within each individual. Nyabinghi (Mansion Of Rastafari)
Nyabinghi is one of the oldest denominations, or " Orders", of the Rastafari movement. Probably the largest Rastafari group, the House of Nyabinghi is an aggregate of more traditional and militant Rastas who seek to retain the movement close to the way in which it existed during the 1940s. They stress the idea that Haile Selassie was Jah and the second coming of Jesus. It was founded by Rastafari elders such as Ras Boanerges, Bredda Authur and others. The name was supposedly taken from a legendary Rwandan, Ugandan, or Tanzanian woman whose name is said to mean "she who possesses many things". This woman's name later inspired the Nyabinghi rebellion movement that began in Uganda.
