Schroon ( ) is a town in the Adirondack Park, in Essex County, New York, United States. The population was 1,654 at the 2010 census. The largest community in town is the hamlet of Schroon Lake, located at the northern end of the lake of the same name. The Town of Schroon is in the southern part of Essex County and is north of Albany. The town contains two lakes: the northern two-thirds of Schroon Lake, and Paradox Lake. The two lakes are connected by the Schroon River, a southward-flowing tributary of the Hudson River. Local attractions Schroon Lake () is located in the towns of Schroon and Horicon, and is a year-round tourist destination, with boating, swimming and fishing in the summer and snowmobiling, snowshoeing and ice fishing in the winter; hiking and hunting are popular in the fall and spring. Minerva is a town in Essex County, New York, United States. The population was 809 at the 2010 census. The town is named after Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom. The town is located in the southwestern corner of the county. Adirondack Marathon
The Adirondack Marathon is a marathon held each September in Schroon Lake, New York. The race follows a road course around the lake. The race motto is "The most beautiful 26 miles 385 yards you will ever run." There were 331 finishers in 2010. Course The Adirondack Marathon begins on Main St. in Schroon Lake Village. The course goes north on Rt. 9 to the Alder Meadow Rd where it stays relatively flat for the first three and a half miles; however, between three and a half and six miles (10 km) the course rises almost to an elevation of above sea level. On the east side of Schroon Lake the course follows East Shore Drive, a scenic Adirondack Mountain road. The course drops to an elevation of between miles six and eight, and then steadily climbs again between miles eight and eleven.
