Sergeant Bluff-Luton School District
The Sergeant Bluff-Luton School District is a rural public school district located in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa. The school district, entirely in Woodbury County, provides education for students living in Sergeant Bluff and Luton. A small portion of Sioux City is in the district boundaries. Many students also open-enroll from nearby Sioux City. Schools Primary school Located on 206 South D St, Sergeant Bluff-Luton Primary School is the oldest of the four schools in the district, completed in 1959 (according to its foundation plaque on display at the front office in the building). It has 42 staff and approximately 450 students. Elementary school As the newest school in the district, the school was completed in time to host the class of 2001 as the first class to graduate from its new gymnasium (completed in the summer of 2000 according to the official dedication plaque outside the main office). Sergeant Bluff is a city in Woodbury County, Iowa, Woodbury County, Iowa, United States. It is part of the Sioux City, Iowa, Sioux City, IA–Nebraska, NE–South Dakota, SD Sioux City metropolitan area, Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 5,015 at the time of the 2020 United States Census, 2020 census. History The city was named in honor of U.S. Army Sergeant Charles Floyd (explorer), Charles Floyd, a native of Kentucky who was one of the first men to enlist in the Lewis and Clark Expedition in the early 1800s. Just three months into the two-year journey, Floyd became violently ill and died the next day, August 20, 1804, of what is believed to have been a ruptured Appendix (anatomy), appendix. He was buried on a hill overlooking an unnamed river on the Iowa side of the Missouri River. Woodbury County, Iowa
Woodbury County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the population was 105,941, making it the sixth-most populous county in Iowa. The county seat is Sioux City. Woodbury County is included in the Sioux City metropolitan area. History Originally established in 1851 as Wahkaw County, the Iowa Legislature in 1853 changed the name to Woodbury County in honor of Levi Woodbury (1789–1851), a senator and governor of New Hampshire who served as a Supreme Court justice from 1844 until his death. The first county seat of Wahkaw County was the now-extinct village of Thompsonville; when the Legislature changed the county name to Woodbury, the new county seat became Sergeant's Bluff (now Sergeant Bluff). The Missouri River Activities Conference (also called MRAC) is a high school athletic and activities conference whose members are located in either the Sioux City Metropolitan Area or the Omaha-Council Bluffs Metropolitan Area, both located along the Missouri River on the border of western Iowa. The Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) is the regulating body for male Iowa high school interscholastic athletics and is a full member of the National Federation of State High School Associations.
