Senedd Elections
This is a list of elections to the Senedd (Welsh Parliament; ; formerly the National Assembly of Wales until May 2020), the devolved legislature of Wales. These elections have been held regularly since its establishment in 1999. The elections were held every four years from 1999, but were increased to five years following the Wales Act 2014 for the 2016 election. Senedd
The Senedd (; ), officially known as the Welsh Parliament in English and () in Welsh, is the devolved, unicameral legislature of Wales. A democratically elected body, it makes laws for Wales, agrees certain taxes and scrutinises the Welsh Government. It is a bilingual institution, with both Welsh and English being the official languages of its business. From its creation in May 1999 until May 2020, the Senedd was known as the National Assembly for Wales ( cy, Cynulliad Cenedlaethol Cymru, lang, link=no). The Senedd comprises 60 members who are known as Members of the Senedd (), abbreviated as "MS" (). Since 2011, members are elected for a five-year term of office under an additional member system, in which 40 MSs represent smaller geographical divisions known as "constituencies" and are elected by first-past-the-post voting, and 20 MSs represent five "electoral regions" using the D'Hondt method of proportional representation. Next Senedd Election
The next Senedd election is due to be held in or before May 2026 to elect 60 members to the Senedd (Welsh Parliament; ). It will be the seventh devolved general election since the Senedd (formerly the National Assembly for Wales) was established in 1999. It will also be the second election since the Senedd changed its name in May 2020. A reform of the voting system is currently being discussed by the Senedd, with the Government of Wales seeking to implement it for the next election scheduled for 2026. Election reform for the Senedd has been suggested in multiple directions: * increasing the size of the assembly (because of overload), * changing the voting method (making it more proportional, or simpler to understand) * enforcing diversity quotas. 2007 National Assembly For Wales Election
The 2007 National Assembly for Wales election was held on Thursday 3 May 2007 to elect members to the Senedd, National Assembly for Wales. It was the third general election. On the same day local elections in England and Scotland, as well as the 2007 Scottish Parliament election, Scottish Parliament election took place. This election was preceded by the 2003 National Assembly for Wales election, previous Assembly election in 2003. The election saw Plaid Cymru make gains at the expense of Welsh Labour Party, Labour, although Labour remain the largest party in the Assembly, as they have since it began. 1999 National Assembly For Wales Election
The first National Assembly for Wales elections were held on 6 May 1999. The overall turnout of voters was 46.3%. Although Welsh Labour were the biggest party, they did not gain enough seats to form a majority government and instead entered into coalition with the Liberal Democrats. The election was marked by the historically high level of support for Plaid Cymru, who won their highest share of the vote in any Wales-wide election and, as of 2021, their highest number of seats in an Assembly election to date. The party won considerable support in traditionally safe Labour areas such as the South Wales Valleys, winning Rhondda and Islwyn and narrowly failing to win a number of other seats. Elections In Wales
There are four types of elections in Wales: elections to the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, elections to the devolved Senedd (Welsh Parliament; ), local elections to the 22 principal areas, and the Police and Crime Commissioner elections, in addition to by-elections for each aforementioned election. Elections are held on Election Day, which is conventionally a Thursday. Since the passing of the Fixed-term Parliaments Act 2011 for UK general elections, all four types of elections are held after fixed periods, though early elections to the UK parliament can occur in certain situations, with Senedd elections being postponed to avoid elections to the UK parliament and Senedd coinciding with each other.
