The Secretary for Justice ( pt, Secretaria da Justiça) was a bureau secretary and senior law officer in Portuguese Macau. The Secretary headed the Secretariat for Justice, which was responsible for legal affairs and public prosecution in the colony. The department was replaced by the Secretariat for Administration and Justice in December 1999. Portuguese Macau (officially the Province of Macau until 1976, and then the Autonomous Region of Macau from 1976 to 1999) was a Portuguese Empire, Portuguese colony that existed from the first official Portuguese settlement in 1557 to the end of colonial rule and the transfer of sovereignty over Macau to the China, People's Republic of China in 1999. Macau or Macao (; ; ; ), officially the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China (MSAR), is a city and special administrative region of China in the western Pearl River Delta by the South China Sea. With a population of about 680,000 and an area of , it is the most densely populated region in the world. Formerly a Portuguese colony, the territory of Portuguese Macau was first leased to Portugal as a trading post by the Ming dynasty in 1557.
