Sebeto Fountain
The Fontana del Sebeto is a monumental fountain located in largo Sermoneta in the zone of Mergellina of Naples, Italy. The fountain was commissioned by the viceroy Emanuele Zunica e Fonseca and built by Carlo Fanzago based on a design by his father, Cosimo. Originally situated on Via Gusmana (now Via Cesario Console), it was moved to the actual location in 1939. The base is made of rock from Piperno; the superior has three basins of marble. The central one has two marine monsters who spout water. The central arch has a recumbent old man representing the river Sebeto, which formerly coursed through the center of town. Two Tritons spread the water to lateral basins. Atop the fountain are the shields with the heraldry of the viceroy, the King of Spain, and the city of Naples. Mergellina
Mergellina is a coastal district of the city of Naples, Italy. It is located in the quartiere of Chiaia. It stands at the foot of the Posillipo Hill and faces the Castel dell'Ovo. Some people say the name derives from "mergoglino", a local name for the smew, others believe it is a corruption of "Mare Giallo", which refers to when the sea turned yellow due to floating tufa rock dust following a volcanic eruption many centuries ago. However, very likely the real origin of the name is from Latin "mare ialinum", that stands for clear, transparent sea. Manuel de Acevedo y Zúñiga (died 1637) was Viceroy of Naples from 14 May 1631 to 12 November 1637. He was the son of Gaspar de Zúñiga, 5th Count of Monterrey, (Monterrei, Ourense, Spain, 1560–1606), founder of the City of Monterrey, Viceroy of Mexico, 1595–1603, Viceroy of Peru, 1604–1606) and Inés de Velasco y Aragón, daughter of Iñigo Fernández de Velasco, 4th Duke of Frías. Cosimo Fanzago (Clusone, 12 October 1591 – Napoli, 13 February 1678) was an Italian architect and sculptor, generally considered the greatest such artist of the Baroque period in Naples, Italy. Facade Santa Maria della Sapienza. Biography Fanzago was born in Clusone (current Province of Bergamo) in a family of bronze-casters and architects. In 1608, after a short stay in Chieti, he moved to Naples. Here (according to what he wrote in 1612) he trained as a marble sculptor (''maestro di scultura di marmo'') and mason under the Tuscan sculptor Angelo Landi. His first important work was the sepulchre monument of Mario Carafa, a relative of Cardinal Carafa. His architectural debut was the design of San Giuseppe dei Vecchi a San Potito (completed 1669). Triton (; grc-gre, Τρίτων, Trítōn) is a Greek mythology, Greek god of the sea, the son of Poseidon and Amphitrite, god and goddess of the sea respectively.
