Seamus Cahill
Seamus Augustine Cahill is an Irish born greyhound trainer. He is a British champion trainer and winner of the English Greyhound Derby. Career Seamus Cahill is from Mullinhoe, County Waterford and joined Catford Stadium in 1994 working for Paddy Milligan. In 1997 he took control of Milligan's Catford Stadium racing kennels in Keston and established himself as a leading trainer. He reached the final of the Laurels in his maiden year of 1997. One year later he moved from Catford to Wimbledon Stadium. In 2002 finished runner-up in the 2002 English Greyhound Derby final with Call Me Baby and Shevchenko provided the first Classic win when sealing a Gold Collar triumph in the same year. A short lived move to Walthamstow Stadium was followed by a switch to Brighton & Hove Greyhound Stadium before he won his first Trainers Championship at Wimbledon in 2008 and became Greyhound Trainer of the Year in 2010. A greyhound trainer is a person who trains greyhounds for racing. This involves exercising, feeding, and grooming them in addition to keeping the greyhound in race condition to enable the greyhound to race to the best of its ability. 2017 English Greyhound Derby
The 2017 Star Sports Greyhound Derby took place during June and July and the final was held on 1 July 2017 at Towcester Greyhound Stadium. It was the first time since 1984 that the event was held away from Wimbledon Stadium and the first time in its history that it was held outside of London. The competition was sponsored by bookmaker Star Sports for the first time with a winner's prize of £175,000. The winner was Astute Missile who was the outsider at 28-1, his owner Geoff Hill won £175,000. The Greyhound of the Year Awards are the annual awards for the leading greyhounds in the United Kingdom. The British Greyhound Breeders & Owners Association inaugurated the Silver Greyhound Awards in 1951 and every year the winners were announced at the annual dinner and ball at the Dorchester Hotel. In 1970 the voting switched to the Greyhound Trainers & Breeders Association and the venue changed to the London Hilton on Park Lane. In 1982 the Greyhound Writers Association took over the voting and today the awards are now known as the Greyhound Board of Great Britain annual awards which are held at a different venue every year. The 2002 William Hill Greyhound Derby took place during May and June with the final being held on 1 June 2002 at Wimbledon Stadium. The winner received £75,000. Competition report There were 173 entries for the 2002 Derby but one of the Britain's leading greyhounds Top Savings was lame and would miss the event, he had been quoted as a short 4-1 ante post favourite. Despite the loss of Top Savings trainer Charlie Lister and owner Ray White had brought Rapid Ranger out of retirement for an unprecedented third title attempt. Wimbledon Stadium
Wimbledon Stadium, also known as Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium, was a greyhound racing track located in Wimbledon in southwest London, England. It also hosted stock car and other small circuit motor racing events, and until 2005 hosted motorcycle speedway. The stadium hosted the English Greyhound Derby every year between 1985 and 2016. Facing declining attendances and with no renovations undertaken for many years, the stadium was put up for sale by the owners, the Greyhound Racing Association, and closed permanently in March 2017. The site was purchased by Galliard Homes Limited, in order to build 600 new apartments and a new football stadium, the new Plough Lane, for AFC Wimbledon. Laurels (greyhounds)
The Laurels is an original classic greyhound competition held at Perry Barr Stadium. It was run at Wimbledon Stadium from 1930 until 1997. It then moved to Belle Vue Stadium in 1998 and remained there until 2017 when it switched to Newcastle Stadium. After two years at Newcastle and a cancellation in 2020 due to COVID-19 it switched to Perry Barr in 2021. competition lost its Category 1 status but was still regarded as one of the most valuable prizes during the racing year. Keston
Keston is a village in Greater London, England, located within the London Borough of Bromley, Greater London. Prior to 1965 it was withing the historic county of Kent.
