In biology, a common name of a taxon or organism (also known as a vernacular name, English name, colloquial name, country name, popular name, or farmer's name) is a name that is based on the normal language of everyday life; and is often contrasted with the scientific name for the same organism, which is Latinized. Sebastidae
Sebastinae is a subfamily of marine fish belonging to the family Scorpaenidae in the order Scorpaeniformes. Their common names include rockfishes, rock perches, ocean perches, sea perches, thornyheads, scorpionfishes, sea ruffes and rockcods. Despite the latter name, they are not closely related to the cods in the genus ''Gadus'', nor the rock cod, ''Lotella rhacina''. Taxonomy Sebastinae, or Sebastidae, was first formally recognised as a grouping in 1873 by the German naturalist Johann Jakob Kaup. Some authorities recognise this family as distinct from Scorpaenidae. ''Sebastes'' is a genus of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the subfamily Sebastinae part of the family Scorpaenidae, most of which have the common name of rockfish. A few are called ocean perch, sea perch or redfish instead. They are found in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The orange roughy (''Hoplostethus atlanticus''), also known as the red roughy, slimehead and deep sea perch, is a relatively large deep-sea fish belonging to the slimehead family (Trachichthyidae). The UK Marine Conservation Society has categorized orange roughy as "vulnerable to exploitation". The Waigieu seaperch (''Psammoperca waigiensis''), or Waigeo barramundi, is a species of marine fish in family Latidae of order Perciformes. The only species of genus ''Psammoperca'', it is native to tropical coastal waters from the Bay of Bengal in the South through Indonesia to northern Australia and north through the Philippines and the South China Sea to Japan. Reaching a maximum overall length of 47 cm (19 in), ''P. waigiensis'' is of brownish to steel-grey colouration, sometimes with white vertical bars along the body.
