The gens Scribonia was a plebeian family of ancient Rome. Members of this gens first appear in history at the time of the Second Punic War, but the first of the Scribonii to obtain the consulship was Gaius Scribonius Curio in 76 BC.''Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology'', vol. III, p. 758 ("Scribonia Gens"). Origin The nomen ''Scribonius'' belongs to a large class of derived from cognomina ending in ''-o'', most of which were of plebeian origin. Praenomina The only praenomina known to have been used by the main families of the Scribonii are ''Lucius'', used by the Scribonii Libones, and ''Gaius'', used by the Curiones. AD 16) was the secondSuetonius, ''Life of Augustus'', 62.1-2. wife of Octavian, later the Roman Emperor Augustus, and the mother of his only biological child, Julia the Elder. Through her youngest daughter she was the mother-in-law of the Emperor Tiberius, great-grandmother of the Emperor Caligula and Empress Agrippina the Younger, and great-great grandmother of the Emperor Nero. Biography Parentage Scribonia's parentage is unclear. It is known for certain that the name of her mother was Sentia,: ''Sentia Libnismater Scr boniaeCaes ris'. whose ancestors had been directors of the mint. Biography Scribonia was born before 16, as in that year her father was executed by the Roman emperor Tiberius, who had charged him in planning a revolt against the emperor.
