''Scott Walker Sings Jacques Brel'' is a compilation of Jacques Brel compositions recorded by Scott Walker during the period of 1967 to 1969. Scott Walker (singer)
Noel Scott Engel (January 9, 1943 – March 22, 2019), better known by his stage name Scott Walker, was an American-British singer-songwriter, composer and record producer who resided in England. Walker was known for his emotive voice and his unorthodox stylistic path which took him from being a teen pop icon in the 1960s to an avant-garde musician in the 21st century. Walker's success was largely in the United Kingdom, where his first four solo albums reached the top ten. He lived in the UK from 1965 onward and became a UK citizen in 1970. Rising to fame in the mid-1960s as frontman of the pop music trio the Walker Brothers, he began a solo career with 1967's '' Scott'', moving toward an increasingly challenging style on late-1960s baroque pop albums such as ''Scott 3'' and ''Scott 4'' (both 1969). After sales of his solo work started to decrease, he reunited with the Walker Brothers in the mid-1970s. From the mid-1980s onward, Walker revived his solo career while moving in an ...

Scott 3
''Scott 3'' is the third solo album by singer songwriter Scott Walker. Upon release in 1969, it met with slightly fewer sales than his previous albums, as pop audiences struggled to keep pace with Walker's increasingly experimental approach, though it still reached #3 on the UK Album Chart. The dense, lush string arrangements by Angela Morley seemed to evoke a Vegas-style lounge crooner atmosphere, but one tinted with surreal drones and touches of dissonance. The album's slightly muted reception and subsequent failure of his short-lived BBC TV series signified the beginning of Walker's decline in popularity. Since its release, however, it has been regarded by many of Walker's fans as a favourite. The title of the compilation '' Fire Escape in the Sky: The Godlike Genius of Scott Walker'' is taken from the lyrics of the song "Big Louise", and the 2006 documentary '' Scott Walker: 30 Century Man'' is named after "30 Century Man". Marc Almond covered the song "Big Louise" in ...

Ne Me Quitte Pas
"Ne me quitte pas" (''"Don't leave me"'') is a 1959 song by Belgian singer-songwriter Jacques Brel. It has been covered in the original French by many artists and has also been translated into and performed in many other languages. A well-known adaptation, with English lyrics by Rod McKuen, is "If You Go Away". Background "Ne me quitte pas" is considered by some as "Brel's ultimate classic". It was written after Brel's mistress "Zizou" ( Suzanne Gabriello) threw him out of her life. Zizou was pregnant with Brel's child, but Brel refused to acknowledge the child as his own. Zizou later had an abortion due to Brel's actions. Brel first recorded the song on 11 September 1959, and it was released on his fourth album '' La Valse à Mille Temps''. It was published by Warner-Chappell Publishing. In 1961 a Dutch-language version sung by Brel was released on the Philips label; entitled "''Laat me niet alleen''", with lyrics by Ernst van Altena, it was a B-side to Marieke (also a Dutch- ...

Their songwriting collaboration saw Pomus write the lyrics and Shuman the melody, although occasionally each worked on both. Their compositions would be recorded by artists such as Dion, The Flamingos, Andy Williams, Bobby Darin, Fabian, Ajda Pekkan, The Drifters, ...

Jacky (Jacques Brel Song)
"Jacky" (La chanson de Jacky) is a song written by the Belgian singer-songwriter Jacques Brel and Gérard Jouannest. Brel recorded the song on 2 November 1965, and it was released on his 1966 album ''Ces Gens-Là''. The song was translated from French into English and retitled "Jackie". The song has been covered a number of times, particularly in Europe. In the United States, the song's popularity grew through its appearance (as "Jackie") in the score of the off-Broadway revue ''Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris'', which opened on 22 January 1968. Scott Walker version "Jackie" was later recorded and released by the American singer-songwriter Scott Walker as his first solo single in 1967. Walker recorded the Mort Shuman translation. The accompaniment was directed by Wally Stott. The single met with controversy in the UK likely because of lyrics like "authentic queers and phony virgins" and drug references. The song was banned by the BBC and was not performed o ...

If You Go Away
"If You Go Away" is an adaptation of the 1959 Jacques Brel song "Ne me quitte pas" with English lyrics by Rod McKuen. Created as part of a larger project to translate Brel's work, "If You Go Away" is considered a pop standard and has been recorded by many artists, including Greta Keller, for whom some say McKuen wrote the lyrics. The complex melody is partly derivative of classical music: the "But if you stay..." passage comes from Franz Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 6. Lyrics A sad but hopeful ballad, the lyrics are told from the perspective of someone telling their lover how much they'd be missed if they left. This is described in vivid, hyperbolic terms, such as "''there'll be nothing left in the world to trust''". If the lover stays, the narrator promises them both devotion and good times ("''I'll make you a day / Like no day has been, or will be again''"). Some lines show that the narrator is speaking to the lover as they are already leaving, or considering doing so ...
