A commonwealth is a traditional English term for a political community founded for the common good. Historically, it has been synonymous with "republic". The noun "commonwealth", meaning "public welfare, general good or advantage", dates from the 15th century. Scotland At The Commonwealth Games
Scotland is one of only six countries to have competed in every Commonwealth Games since the first Empire Games in 1930. The others are Australia, Canada, England, New Zealand and Wales. The Commonwealth Games is the only major multi-sport event in which Scottish athletes and teams compete as Scotland; otherwise Scotland participates in multi-sport events as part of a Great Britain team. Scotland has hosted the Commonwealth Games three times, Edinburgh in 1970 and 1986, and Glasgow in 2014. The inaugural Commonwealth Youth Games were held in Edinburgh in 2000. Richard Corsie
Richard Corsie MBE (born 27 November 1966) is a Scottish international outdoor and indoor bowls player, he is considered to be among the best bowls players of all time. Bowls career Corsie won the World Indoor Bowls Championships singles title three times during his career and also won the pairs title twice with Alex Marshall and Graham Robertson respectively. He won the pairs title at the 1992 World Outdoor Bowls Championship with Marshall and two years later won a Commonwealth Games gold medal in the singles at the 1994 Commonwealth Games beating his long-time nemesis and friend Tony Allcock in the final. In 1987, he won the Hong Kong International Bowls Classic singles title, in addition to winning the pairs titles in 1988. Willie Wood (bowler)
William Walker Wood MBE (born 26 April 1938 in Haddington, East Lothian) is a former Scottish professional bowls player, who has mainly competed in the outdoor or lawn form of the game. He is regarded as one of the leading bowlers of his generation and his list of achievements include appearing at eight Commonwealth Games and winning two gold medals and eight World Bowls Championship gold medals. Early life Wood took up bowls at the age of 12, perhaps unsurprisingly as his father, grandfather and mother all played the sport. With little else to occupy his time, Wood says he elected to bowl in his home village of Gifford, rather than brave the bus journey to the swimming baths at nearby North Berwick. George Adrain
George Adrain (born 12 April 1953) is a former Scottish international lawn bowler. Personal life George is from a famous bowling family, his father ( Willie Adrain) and uncle also called (Willie) were both Scottish internationals. He started bowling aged 14 in early 1968 after being introduced to the sport by his father. Bowls career George won the Scottish Triples in 1974 and British Triples in 1975. His biggest achievement came in the 1984 World Outdoor Championships in Aberdeen but bizarrely it was representing the United States. Jim Candelet fell ill during the competition leaving Skippy Arculli without a partner so Adrain the Scottish reserve took his place and the pair went on to win the Gold Medal. Yvonne Carole Grace Murray-Mooney (née Murray, born 4 October 1964), is a Scottish former middle-distance and long-distance track and road-running athlete. She won a bronze medal in the 3000 metres at the 1988 Olympic Games, and gold medals at this distance at the 1987 European Indoor Championships, the 1993 World Indoor Championships and the 1990 European Championships. Mark Davidson (born 15 November 1968) is a Scottish former sprinter and hurdling athlete who specialised in the 400m hurdles. As of 2017, he is the President of his local athletics club, Aberdeen AAC. Under the stewardship of long-term coach Dr Robert Masson, Davidson set personal best times of 46.9 in the 400m and 50.79 in the 400m H in 1989.
