Schänis railway station (german: Bahnhof Schänis) is a railway station in the municipality of Schänis in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen. It is on the Rapperswil to Ziegelbrücke line. It is one of two railway stations in the ''Gemarkung'' of Schänis, the other being the much larger Ziegelbrücke railway station at the border to Canton Glarus. Schänis
Schänis is a municipality in the ''Wahlkreis'' (constituency) of See-Gaster in the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland. History Schänis is first mentioned in 972 as ''Schennines''. Until 1798 it was the capital of the Herrschaft of Gaster and until 1831 it was the capital of the District. In the War of the Second Coalition, part of the French Revolutionary Wars, it was the site of several battles between the Habsburg forces and the French Revolutionary Army: in particular, the first and second battles of Zurich and the Battle of Winterthur were fought there, or nearby. It was considered part of territory necessary to hold if the Coalition forces were to secure the Swiss Cantons. Rapperswil–Ziegelbrücke Railway Line
The Rapperswil–Ziegelbrücke railway line is a single-track standard-gauge railway line in Switzerland. It was built as part of the route from to Glarus, which was opened by the United Swiss Railways (german: Vereinigte Schweizerbahnen, VSB) on 15 February 1859. History The line was built as an extension of the Wallisellen–Uster–Rapperswil railway (''Glatthalbahn''), which had been extended from Wetzikon to Rüti on 15 August 1858 after its acquisition by the VSB. The line was opened at the same time as the Murg–Sargans line. The intervening section between Weesen and Murg was not completed until 1 July 1859. The line shortened the distance between Zurich and Chur. Ziegelbrücke is a village in Switzerland. Ziegelbrücke is shared by the municipalities of Niederurnen in the canton of Glarus and Schänis in the canton of St. Gallen. Ziegelbrücke Railway Station
Ziegelbrücke railway station (german: Bahnhof Ziegelbrücke) is a junction station in the village of Ziegelbrücke in Switzerland. Whilst the village is shared between the municipality of Glarus Nord, in the canton of Glarus, and the municipality of Schänis, in the canton of St. Gallen, the station is located in the '' Gemarkung'' of Schänis, where it is the larger of two railway stations (the other being Schänis railway station).
