Schuylkill, Philadelphia
Schuylkill is a neighborhood in the South Philadelphia region of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It has many different names and has also been called Graduate Hospital (G-Ho) and Southwest Center City. Schuylkill is part of the 19146 postal code, which lies on the west side of Broad Street as far as 25th Street, where the Point Breeze neighborhood starts, and from the north side of Washington Avenue up to South Street. The Marine Corps Depot of Supplies, Schuylkill Warehouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. Cityscape The area is connected by the South Street Bridge to the University City district across the river. The "Schuylkill Avenue Project" as it is known by the hospital, will be an expansion of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) into the area next to Naval Square. Schuylkill Branch
The Schuylkill Branch was a rail line owned and operated by the former Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. The line ran from the Philadelphia to Harrisburg Main Line at 52nd Street in Philadelphia north via Norristown, Reading, and Pottsville to Delano Junction (about northeast of Delano). From Delano Junction, the PRR had trackage rights over the Lehigh Valley Railroad's Hazleton Branch and Tomhicken Branch to Tomhicken, where the PRR's Catawissa Branch began. In conjunction with the Catawissa Branch, Nescopeck Branch, and Wilkes-Barre Branch, the Schuylkill Branch gave the PRR a direct line from Philadelphia to Wilkes-Barre. Schuylkill Haven is a borough in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, United States. The borough's population was 5,253 as of the 2020 census. Schuylkill Haven is situated along the Schuylkill River, for which it is named. Schuylkill Haven is a focal point of activity in southern Schuylkill County. Schuylkill Haven is located west of Allentown, northwest of Philadelphia, and west of New York City. Early settlements Before Europeans settled the land that is now part of Schuylkill Haven, the area was occupied by the Lenape people, who were known as the Delaware Indians by the British. The earliest white settlers first arrived in the area in the 1730s, traveled north of the Blue Mountain at the modern Berks- Schuylkill County line at that time. Clocker (train)
The ''Clocker'' was a passenger train service between Philadelphia and New York City on the Northeast Corridor at first by the Pennsylvania Railroad and later by Amtrak. The service was nicknamed the ''Clocker'' by riders as trains were scheduled to leave each terminal at the top of the hour. The name was eventually adopted into official use by Amtrak in 1981. The service was briefly renamed ''Acela Commuter'' in 1999 before the name reverted to ''Clocker'' in 2003. Amtrak discontinued the service on October 28, 2005, and it was partially replaced by New Jersey Transit express trains between Trenton, NJ and New York City at times approximating the ''Clocker'' schedule. Schuylkill Mall
Schuylkill Mall was an shopping mall located in Frackville, Pennsylvania. Built in 1980 by Crown American, the mall originally featured Kmart, Hess's, and Sears as its anchor stores; later additions to the mall included Pomeroy's (which was later bought out by The Bon-Ton) and Phar-Mor. In its day, it was one of the largest shopping malls in the state of Pennsylvania. After losing numerous tenants throughout the 2000s and 2010s with the decline in regional economy and residents, the mall had become increasingly vacant. As of 2017, only Dunham's Sports remained as a major anchor tenant. It closed December 31, 2017, relocating to Pottsville's Fairlane Village Mall, where it reopened on December 7, 2018. The last tenant to close in the Schuylkill Mall was Pearl Stadium 8 Theatres, which closed January 15, 2018. Schuylkill And Susquehanna Navigation Company
The Schuylkill and Susquehanna Navigation Company was a limited liability corporation founded in Pennsylvania on September 29, 1791. Reprint of 1990 volume. The company was founded for the purpose of improving river navigation, which in the post-colonial United States era of the 1790s meant improving river systems, not canals. In this Pennsylvania scheme, however, two rivers, a large river, the Susquehanna and a smaller one, the Schuylkill were to be improved by clearing channels through obstructions and building dams where needed. To connect the two watersheds, the company proposed a summit level crossing at Lebanon, a length of almost between the two rivers. The completed project was intended to be part of a navigable water route from Philadelphia to Lake Erie and the Ohio Valley.
