Schetz
The House of Schetz or Schetz de Grobbendonk, originally House von Schetzenberg is a German Noble House. Most famous is the Flemish branch named Schetz, one of whose members became the first duke of Ursel. Origins It is believed that the origin of this family was in 13th-century Franconia, deriving from Schetzenberg or Schetzenberge. It is thought that Werner von Schetzenberge (died 1273), Herr von Polant und Schezsenberge, was one of the founders. The family moved to the Netherlands where Erasmus of Schetzenberg bought the lordship of Grobbendonk. In 1548 they were created Baron of Gobbendonk, and in 1637, by Philip IV of Spain, Count of Grobbendonk. Anthonie II Schetz
Anthonie Schetz (1564, Antwerp - 1640 or 1641, Brussels), was a military commander in Spanish service during the Eighty Years' War. He was baron (and from 1637 count) of Grobbendonk, lord of Tilburg and Goirle, Pulle and Pulderbos, and Wezemaal. He was the military governor of 's-Hertogenbosch until the town was lost to the Dutch in 1629, captain of a cavalry regiment, and a knight of the order of Santiago. Life Early life The youngest son of Gaspard II Schetz and Catharina d'Ursel, of the noble Ursel family, and the younger brother of Conrad III Schetz, Anthonie was baptised in Antwerp in August 1564. His parents had 21 children in total, eight of whom survived to adulthood. Gaspard II Schetz
Gaspar Schetz (1513–1580), Lord of Grobbendonk, Hereditary Marshal of Brabant was a financier and statesman in the Habsburg Netherlands. For reasons that are unknown he was nicknamed "Corvinus". Life Gaspar Schetz was born in Antwerp on 20 July 1513, the son of Erasmus II Schetz, Lord of Usbach and Grobbendonk, and Ida Van Rechtergem. Active in finance and commerce, he maintained a lively interest in literature. From Charles de Brimeu, the last lord of Meghem, he purchased the lordship of Wezemaal, which brought with it the title of hereditary marshal of the Duchy of Brabant. The House of Ursel is the name of an important old Belgian noble family of German origin. The Head of the House is styled the Duke of Ursel, while other members are styled as Count/Countess d'Ursel. History The Ursel family roots are in Schmalkalden, Germany, and were collateral branch of the House of Schetzenberg. In the late 15th century, some members moved to Hasselt and Antwerp. Erasmus II Schetz sometimes Scets died 1550 was a Flemish nobleman. Lord of Grobbendonk He was born as son of Conrad I Schetz who married in 1485 to Maria Crans di Roscara, daughter of Mathieu Roscara. He lived in Maastricht, and came to Antwerp for financial reasons. He acquired the Heerlijkheid of Grobbendonk on the 3 Juny 1545, he paid it from Philippe, Lord of Jauche. His descendants are known as Schetz de Grobbendonk, when it became a barony in 1602. He married Ida of Rechtergem, daughter of a wealthy calamine trader in Aachen. They had 4 sons, three of them named after the Three wise men. His fortune was immense, he had a residence called ''Huis van Aken'', heritage (1534) of his father in law. He had the house extended into a small palace where Emperor Charles V visited in 1545. After the death of Erasmus, the house was sold in 1575. Lord of Grobbendonk is a feudal Flemish title originating from Grobbendonk. This title belongs today to the Belgian nobility. History The origin of this important hereditary title goes back to the 13th century.
