Scala Cinema (Bangkok)
The Scala Cinema ( th, โรงภาพยนตร์สกาล่า) was a thousand-seat movie theater in Bangkok, Thailand, named after the Teatro alla Scala, Milan's opera house. Scala opened on 31 December 1969 with a screening of '' The Undefeated'' (1969), a US Western starring John Wayne and Rock Hudson. It closed on 5 July 2020, showing, as its last film, '' Cinema Paradiso''. The Scala, called "...the finest movie theater left in Southeast Asia" was the last stand-alone cinema in Bangkok, down from roughly 140 movie houses in the 1950s and 1960s. History Scala, in the Siam Square shopping area, was one of the Apex group of cinemas which included Siam Cinema, Lido Cinema, and Scala. Cinemas in Thailand are popular venues for entertainment. Especially in Bangkok, the movie theaters tend to be multiplex facilities offering many other forms of entertainment besides movies, such as bowling or karaoke, along with restaurants and small shops. Ubon Ratchathani
Ubon Ratchathani ( th, อุบลราชธานี, ) is one of the four major cities of Isan (with Khorat/Nakhon Ratchasima, Udon Thani, and Khon Kaen), also known as the "big four of Isan." Philip Jablon
Philip Jablon (born ) is an American independent researcher, known for photographing and documenting historic movie palaces and stand-alone movie theaters in Thailand and neighbouring countries through his blog, the ''Southeast Asia Movie Theater Project''. Jablon first came across Thailand's old stand-alone theaters while studying at Chiang Mai University, and was inspired to photograph and document the disappearing buildings. He started publishing photos through his blog in 2009 and has since continued with the project. His work has been exhibited and published in book form. Biography Jablon is from Philadelphia.
