Saylesville, Rhode Island
Saylesville is a village and historic district in Lincoln, Rhode Island. History The area was settled as a farming community in the 17th century. The historic Eleazer Arnold House (built 1693) is located near the village. The Saylesville Meeting House (built 1704) is one of the oldest surviving Quaker (Society of Friends) meeting houses in New England and one of the oldest church buildings in Rhode Island. In the nineteenth century William F. Sayles started the Sayles Bleacheries across from Bleachery Pond at the base of the hill below the neighborhood today known as Saylesville. Saylesville was a mill town, largely built by William Sayles's son Frank Sayles as housing for workers and managers from the textile mill then known as Sayles Finishing Plants. Many of the original single and two family homes survive to this day, though more recent additions to them blur the similarity of the original housing stock. Lincoln, Rhode Island
Lincoln is a town in Providence County, Rhode Island, United States. The population was 22,529 at the 2020 census. Lincoln is located in northeastern Rhode Island, north of Providence. Lincoln is part of the Providence metropolitan statistical area and the Greater Boston combined statistical area. Lincoln was settled in the 17th century as part of the Louisquisset grant, and several colonial stone-enders still exist in the town. Lincoln Woods State Park is located within the town. Limestone quarrying has occurred there since colonial times at the village of Lime Rock. Lincoln was a part of the town of Smithfield until 1871, when it was split off and named in honor of Abraham Lincoln. Saylesville Meetinghouse
The Saylesville Friends Meetinghouse is an historic Quaker meetinghouse located at 374 Great Road within the village of Saylesville in the town of Lincoln, Rhode Island. The Quaker (Society of Friends) meetinghouse was built in 1703–04, consisting of a modest, nearly rectangular wood-frame structure. An expansion to the building was added c. 1745, joining a larger two-story structure to the old one. Moses Brown and Samuel Slater, credited with founding Slater Mill, often described as the start of the American Industrial Revolution, were members either of Providence Friends Meeting, Saylesville Friends Meeting or Smithfield Friends Meeting House, Parsonage and Cemetery—sources are unclear. Providence Meeting is most likely because of its proximity to Moses Brown's farm, but Slater Mill is also reasonably close to the Saylesville Meetinghouse. The Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island was a hospital in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, USA. History The hospital was founded through an 1894 bequest from William F. Sayles, a businessman and philanthropist who owned mills in Saylesville, Rhode Island. Sayles' son, Frank A. Sayles, decided to build the original 30-bed hospital with the funds. Throughout the 20th century the size of the hospital expanded greatly. The hospital was a 294-bed facility serving the Blackstone Valley of Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts. Memorial Hospital was a teaching affiliate of the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Other smaller facilities are located in Quality Hill, Plainville and Central Falls.
