The Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island was a hospital in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, USA. History The hospital was founded through an 1894 bequest from William F. Sayles, a businessman and philanthropist who owned mills in Saylesville, Rhode Island. Sayles' son, Frank A. Sayles, decided to build the original 30-bed hospital with the funds. Throughout the 20th century the size of the hospital expanded greatly. The hospital was a 294-bed facility serving the Blackstone Valley of Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts. Memorial Hospital was a teaching affiliate of the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Other smaller facilities are located in Quality Hill, Plainville and Central Falls. The Warren Alpert Medical School (formerly known as Brown Medical School, previously known as Brown University School of Medicine) is the medical school of Brown University, located in Providence, Rhode Island. Originally established in 1811, it was the third medical school to be founded in New England after only Harvard and Dartmouth. Saylesville, Rhode Island
Saylesville is a village and historic district in Lincoln, Rhode Island. History The area was settled as a farming community in the 17th century. The historic Eleazer Arnold House (built 1693) is located near the village. The Saylesville Meeting House (built 1704) is one of the oldest surviving Quaker (Society of Friends) meeting houses in New England and one of the oldest church buildings in Rhode Island. In the nineteenth century William F. Sayles started the Sayles Bleacheries across from Bleachery Pond at the base of the hill below the neighborhood today known as Saylesville. Kent Hospital is a community teaching hospital located in Warwick, Rhode Island. It was a founding member of the Care New England in 1996, along with Women & Infants Hospital and Butler Hospital. History Kent Hospital was chartered by the State of Rhode Island in 1946, and was opened in 1951 with 90 beds. It was expanded in 1960, 1973, and 1981 in response to rapid community growth.
