Rina Sawayama
is a Japanese–British singer-songwriter, actress and model. Born in Niigata, Japan, she emigrated to London with her parents at age five. She is known for her musical versatility and has been labelled a "musical chameleon". In 2017, she self-released her debut extended play, '' Rina''. After signing to Dirty Hit in 2020, she released her debut studio album, ''Sawayama'', to widespread critical acclaim. Her second studio album ''Hold the Girl'' was released on 16 September 2022. The song criticises capitalism in the face of climate change over a pop, R&B, avant-pop and electropop backing. A remix featuring British artist Bree Runway, was released on 10 July 2020. Background, themes and composition Sawayama said in a statement that "XS" is a song that "mocks capitalism in a sinking world": "XS" is a 2000s-inspired pop, R&B, avant-pop and electropop song with "upbeat bubblegum pop vibes" composed in the key of D minor with a tempo of 117 beats per minute. A remix by End of the World was released on 20 November 2020. Sawayama has called the track her favourite from the album and stated that it was written after she found out through social media that her formerly close friend had just had a baby. Composition The synth-pop ballad is inspired by " Bush-era pop" with vocal manipulation inspired by Imogen Heap. Channelling "the same heart-on-sleeve emotion as ''Stripped''-era Christina Aguilera" the song features a choral bridge described as a "take 'em to church moment". Adam Mark Crisp (born c. 1985), known by the stage name Clarence Clarity, is an English singer, songwriter, producer, and musician. He has been praised for his unique, eclectic pop sound which was described by ''The Guardian'' as "funk played by a swarm of bees". Background Crisp was born in London and raised in Yateley and Fleet, Hampshire.
