Sawantwadi toys refers to hand made works of art made of wood in Sawantwadi a town in Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra, an Indian state. It is reported that the makers of these toys face the challenge of competition from mass-produced cheap China, Chinese products. A news story dated May, 2013, bemoans the lack of state support to this traditional art form. Sawantwadi an aesthetic land of artists, is an integral part of the Konkan region which is in the mid-western coast of India. Sindhudurg district (Marathi pronunciation: in̪d̪ʱud̪uɾɡ is an administrative district of the Konkan division in India, which was carved out of the erstwhile Ratnagiri district. The district headquarters are located at Oros and the district occupies an area of approximately 5,207 km and has a population of 849,651, of which 12.59% were urban (as of 2011).
