The Savoy Club was a contract bridge club established in May 1966 on Sunset Strip The Sunset Strip is the stretch of Sunset Boulevard that passes through the city of West Hollywood, California. It extends from West Hollywood's eastern border with the city of Los Angeles near Marmont Lane to its western border with Beverly H ..., Hollywood, California. Founded by Frank Van Haraz, acquired a year later by the group of Lorne Greene, Lew Mathe, Norman Moss and George Bassman, it quickly came under the sole ownership and control of George Bassman. The club had a reciprocal agreement with the Cavendish Club of New York. The facility provided a plush playing environment augmented by lounge and dining areas and a complete bridge library. The Sunset Strip is the stretch of Sunset Boulevard that passes through the city of West Hollywood, California. Lorne Greene
Lorne Hyman Greene (born Lyon Himan Green; 12 February 1915 – 11 September 1987) was a Canadian actor, musician, singer and radio personality. His notable television roles include Ben Cartwright on the Western ''Bonanza'' and Commander Adama in the original science-fiction television series ''Battlestar Galactica'' and ''Galactica 1980''. He also worked on the Canadian television nature documentary series ''Lorne Greene's New Wilderness'' and in television commercials. Early life and career in Canada Greene was born Lyon Himan Green in Ottawa, Ontario, to Jewish immigrants from the Russian Empire, Dora (née Grinovsky) and Daniel Green, a shoemaker. Lew Mathe
Lewis Lawrence Mathe (March 27, 1915 – March 10, 1986) was an American world champion bridge player and administrator from Canoga Park, California. Mathe, a native of New York, served in the Army during World War II; he enlisted two days before the attack on Pearl Harbor. He died in Los Angeles in 1986. George Bassman
George Bassman (February 7, 1914 – June 26, 1997) was an American composer and arranger. Biography Born in New York City to a Ukrainian- and Lithuanian-Jewish émigré couple, Bassman was later raised in Boston and began studying music at the Boston Conservatory while still a boy. He studied orchestration and composition formally, but in his teens he left home against his father's wishes to play piano in an itinerant jazz group, and subsequently worked as an arranger for Fletcher Henderson in New York. Through that gig, he became part of the burgeoning swing/big band scene and was soon writing songs as well. Bassman peaked in that career when he and Ned Washington wrote "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You" for the bandleader Tommy Dorsey. Bassman also worked in radio as an arranger for Andre Kostelanetz, and made the move to Hollywood in the mid 1930s. Cavendish Club
The Cavendish Club was a prestigious contract bridge club founded in 1925 by Wilbur Whitehead in association with Gratz M. Scott and Edwin A. Wetzlar. Initially located at the Mayfair House (65th and Park Avenue) in New York City, it relocated several times with a final address in a townhouse on 73rd. St. It ceased operations at the end of May 1991 as a result of rent escalations and falling membership. The Cavendish had reciprocal arrangements with Crockford's in London, the Golfer's in Paris and the Savoy in Hollywood, California. In 1975, the Club inaugurated the Cavendish Invitational Pairs, now one of the strongest and most prestigious invitational contract bridge events in the world.
