Herman Trophy
The Goren Trophy (formerly the Herman Trophy) is awarded to the player who wins the greatest number of masterpoints at the fall American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) North American Bridge Championship (NABC). History The Herman Trophy was donated in 1951 by Sally Lipton, formerly Mrs. Lou Herman, in memory of Lou Herman (1908–1950), a Houston jeweler who was ACBL Life Master #218. Mrs. Lipton was a member of the ACBL office staff in New York and an ACBL tournament director. In 2008, the trophy was renamed the Goren Trophy to honor one of the game's greatest contributors, Charles Goren. Masterpoints
Masterpoints or master points are points awarded by bridge organizations to individuals for success in competitive bridge tournaments run under their auspices. Generally, recipients must be members in good standing of the issuing organization. At the international level, competitions and point awards are administered by the World Bridge Federation (WBF); its affiliates at the multi-national level, such as the American Contract Bridge League (ACBL), also issue points as do more local organizations such as the English Bridge Union (EBU), and the Deutsche Bridge Verband (DBV) and independent ones such as the American Bridge Association (ABA). In general, each organization has its own scheme for the categorization of competitive bridge events and has a parallel scheme for awarding various categories of points to players who are successful in them. Ira Rubin
Ira Rubin (1930 – February 6, 2013) was an American professional contract bridge player. Rubin attended the Bronx High School of Science and later New York University. Rubin lived in Fair Lawn, New Jersey, Fair Lawn and resided in nearby Paramus, New Jersey, Paramus for 35 years. Rubin learned to play bridge as a boy in the 1930s, from German language, German-speaking refugees at Lake Placid, New York, Lake Placid, which he visited with his mother, who was not a player. At age nine, he and friends made up bidding conventions. He started to play tournament bridge when he was in high school, and in his thirties became a full-time player, which he was able to pursue because of his wife's income from her occupation in speech pathology. Known as "the Beast" for his intense style of playing, he invented several bidding systems in the game of bridge. He won 23 contract bridge titles, including the Bermuda Bowl in 1976. Grant Baze
Grant Sheridan Baze (June 5, 1943 – January 11, 2009) was an American bridge player. As of 1994 he lived in San Francisco, California. Baze died in 2009. Marty Bergen (bridge)
Marty A. Bergen (born April 21, 1948) is an American bridge teacher, writer and player. A ten-time national champion and American Contract Bridge League Grand Life Master, he retired from active competition in 1993. He is still a bridge teacher and writer and is a World Bridge Federation World International Master. He was recently voted to be the 22nd most influential person in the history of bridge. Bergen has been a columnist in the monthly ''ACBL Bridge Bulletin'' since 1976. He has also written a total of 69 bridge books and booklets from 1995 to 2018 Two of his books won the ABTA Bridge Book of the Year award, ''Points Schmoints!: Bergen's Winning Bridge Secrets'' in 1996 and ''Declarer Play the Bergen Way'' in 2005. Eric Rodwell
Eric Victor Rodwell (born May 1, 1957) is an American professional bridge player. He has won the Bermuda Bowl representing the United States five times and is one of ten players who have won the triple crown of bridge: the Bermuda Bowl, the World Open Pairs and the World Team Olympiad. Personal life Rodwell was born in San Francisco, California and his family moved to West Lafayette, Indiana in 1965 where his father was a professor of biochemistry at Purdue University. He started playing bridge at the age of eleven by reading books and playing with his parents. Rodwell graduated from West Lafayette High School in 1974 and attended Purdue, graduating with a master's degree in finance in 1981. Chip Martel
Charles U. "Chip" Martel (born 1953) is an American computer scientist and bridge player. Martel was Inducted into the ACBL Hall of Fame in 2014. He is married to Jan Martel, also in the ACBL Hall of Fame. Academic life Martel received a B.S. degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1975, and a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in 1980. He helped establish the computer science department at UC Davis, received tenure there in 1985–86, and retired in 2013. At UC Davis he is Charles U. Martel, Professor Emeritus. Jeff Meckstroth
Jeffrey John (Jeff) Meckstroth (born May 15, 1956) is an American professional contract bridge player. He is a multiple world champion, winning the Bermuda Bowl on USA teams five times. He is one of only ten players who have won the so-called triple crown of bridge: the Bermuda Bowl, the World Open Pairs and the World Team Olympiad. As of May 16, 2016, he was the fifth-ranking World Grand Master. For decades Meckstroth has been in a regular partnership with Eric Rodwell and together, nicknamed "Meckwell", they are one of the most successful bridge partnerships of all time. They are well known for playing an aggressive and very detailed system that derived from Precision Club. Bobby Levin
Robert J. (Bobby) Levin (born November 19, 1957) is an American professional bridge player, from Aventura, Florida. He was the youngest winner of the Bermuda Bowl world championship for national teams from 1981 until 2015, when 19-year old Michal Klukowski of Poland succeeded him. Levin is also a five-time winner of the Cavendish Invitational Pairs, the world's leading contest for cash prizes, with his regular partner Steve Weinstein. Bob Hamman
Robert David "Bob" Hamman (born August 6, 1938 in Pasadena, California) is an American professional bridge player, among the greatest players of all time. He is from Dallas, Texas. Hamman and Bobby Wolff played as partners for nearly three decades on teams that challenged for major trophies in North America and often for world championships. Representing the United States (from about 1980, previously North America) they won eight world championships for national teams, the 1988 World Team Olympiad and seven Bermuda Bowls spanning 1970 to 1995. Paul Soloway
Paul Soloway (October 10, 1941 – November 5, 2007) was a world champion American bridge player. He won the Bermuda Bowl world team championship five times and won 30 North American Bridge Championships "national"-level events. Soloway was inducted into the ACBL Hall of Fame in 2002. At the time of his death he held 65,511.92 masterpoints – more than any other player in history, and more than 6000 points ahead of second place. Fred Hamilton (bridge)
Fred Hamilton (born 1936) is a professional American bridge player. Hamilton is a World Bridge Federation (WBF) World Grand Master and American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) Grand Life Master and inventor of the popular Hamilton convention used to compete over the opponent's 1NT opening bid. Born and raised in East Lansing, Michigan, he is more recently from Encino, California. Hamilton has won two world championships, the 1976 Bermuda Bowl as a member of the North America team – beating Italy, with three Blue Team players, in the final – and the 1994 World Senior Pairs Championship with Hamish Bennett.
