Savoy Cinema, Colombo also known as Savoy 3D Cinema and Savoy 2 is a prominent cinema in Sri Lanka located on Galle Road in Wellawatte, Colombo, just near the old Dutch canal. The building is owned and run by EAP Films and Theatres Private Limited. The theatre generally have premiere releases in four languages including English, Sinhala, Tamil and Hindi languages. The cinema opened in August 1949 with the premiere of ''The Jolson Story''. It was initially owned and operated by C. EAP Films
EAP Films was originally founded as Edirisinghe Cinema Theatres in 1972. It has the largest share of the Sri Lanka theatre market with more than 15+ screens island-wide. It started producing films in 1994 and its first release was ''Dhawala Pushpaya'' (1994). The company has been listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange since the 2000s. History The company was founded by a husband-and-wife team in 1972 as Edirisinghe Cinema Theatres under its parent company, EAP Group. EAP acquired Savoy Cinema theatres in 1974. At first only Sinhala films were distributed, but during the mid-1980s a license for distribution of Hollywood movies was added. Its theatres converted to digital in 2014. Wellawatta is a neighbourhood of Colombo, Sri Lanka. It lies immediately south of Bambalapitiya and is classified as zone 6 within the Colombo Municipal region. Hamilton Canal
The Hamilton Canal ( Sinhala: හැමිල්ටන් ඇල ''Hæmiltan Æla'') (also commonly known as the Dutch Canal) is a canal connecting Puttalam to Colombo, passing through Negombo in Sri Lanka. The canal was constructed by the British in 1802 and completed in 1804. It was designed to drain salt water out of the Muthurajawela wetlands. Sinhala ( ; , ''siṁhala'', ), sometimes called Sinhalese (), is an Indo-Aryan language primarily spoken by the Sinhalese people of Sri Lanka, who make up the largest ethnic group on the island, numbering about 16 million. The Jolson Story
''The Jolson Story'' is a 1946 American musical biography film which purports to tell the life story of singer Al Jolson. It stars Larry Parks as Jolson, Evelyn Keyes as Julie Benson (approximating Jolson's wife, Ruby Keeler), William Demarest as his manager, Ludwig Donath and Tamara Shayne as his parents, and Scotty Beckett as the young Jolson. Savoy Theatre
The Savoy Theatre is a West End theatre in the Strand in the City of Westminster, London, England. The theatre was designed by C. J. Phipps for Richard D'Oyly Carte and opened on 10 October 1881 on a site previously occupied by the Savoy Palace. Its intended purpose was to showcase the popular series of comic operas of Gilbert and Sullivan, which became known as the Savoy operas. The theatre was the first public building in the world to be lit entirely by electricity. For many years, the Savoy Theatre was the home of the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, which continued to be run by the Carte family for over a century. Richard's son Rupert D'Oyly Carte rebuilt and modernised the theatre in 1929, and it was rebuilt again in 1993 following a fire. It is a Grade II* listed building.
