Saville Sports Centre
The Saville Community Sports Centre is a sports facility run by the University of Alberta's Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation, where it is located in Edmonton, Alberta. It features a curling rink, tennis courts and a gymnasium. Opened in 2003, the centre currently serves as the national training centre for curling in Canada. Its curling facilities include ten sheets, and is home to a membership of nearly 2000 curlers, making it the curling club with the largest membership list in the world. The club is home to many of the top curling teams in the world, including Olympic gold medallist Kevin Martin, Brier champion Kevin Koe, Randy Ferbey, Ted Appelman, Chris Schille, Cathy King, Heather Nedohin and Val Sweeting. Heather Nedohin
Heather Nedohin (born Heather Godberson; July 15, 1975) is a Canadian curler from Sherwood Park, Alberta. She is a Canadian former and World Junior champion, two-time Tournament of Hearts Champion and a two-time World bronze medalist. She is married to three time World Champion David Nedohin. She currently coaches the Kerri Einarson rink. Career Born in Fort St. John, British Columbia, Nedohin's family moved to Alberta. Juniors Nedohin won her first and only Alberta provincial junior curling title in 1996. This earned her, and her Grande Prairie rink of third Carmen Whyte, second Kristie Moore and lead Terelyn Bloor the right to represent Alberta at the 1996 Canadian Junior Curling Championships in Edmonton. The team finished the round robin with a 9-3 record, tied for first with Nova Scotia's Meredith Doyle. Curling Clubs In Canada
Curling is a sport in which players slide #Curling stone, stones on a sheet of ice toward a target area which is segmented into four concentric circles. It is related to bowls, boules, and shuffleboard. Two teams, each with four players, take turns sliding heavy, polished granite stones, also called ''rocks'', across the ice ''curling sheet'' toward the ''house'', a circular target marked on the ice. Each team has eight stones, with each player throwing two. Bruce Saville (born December 5, 1944) is a Canadian businessman and philanthropist who currently lives in Edmonton, Alberta. He is former shareholder of the Edmonton Oilers before the Edmonton Investors Group was sold. Career Early career Saville started his career working in the Sales and Service division of Goodyear in Ontario. As part of his job, he was required to create 10-page summary reports using a manual calculator and data from a 4-foot thick computer printout generated each month. Saville sought to computerize this process. He brought the idea of computerization to Goodyear's IT department; they replied they were too busy. At Saville's next hockey game he then approached a member of his hockey team who was a systems analyst. At the following hockey game, his teammate came with five volumes of Cobol programming manuals. 2015 FIBA Americas Women's Championship
The 2015 FIBA Americas Championship for Women, held in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, was the qualifying tournament for FIBA Americas at the 2016 Summer Olympics Basketball Tournament in Brazil. The champion qualified directly for the Olympics. On the first day of the tournament, at coincident FIBA Central Board meetings in Tokyo, Brazil's men's and women's teams were granted automatic entry to the Olympic Tournament as highly ranked host teams. After allowing for Brazil's and the tournament winner's direct qualification for the Olympics, the next highest three teams in this tournament went to the final 2016 Summer Olympics Basketball Qualifying Tournament, competing against the highest placed non-winners of the other regional Championships. Alberta Golden Bears And Pandas
The Alberta Golden Bears and Pandas are the sports teams that represent the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Alberta athletics teams have won a total of 93 national championships, including 79 U Sports sanctioned sports, making it one of the most successful programs in the country. History The University of Alberta has featured varsity teams since the school's inception in 1908, notably with the men's ice hockey team first playing a season of six games during that school year. Valerie Sweeting (born July 9, 1987 in Redvers, Saskatchewan) is a Canadian curler from Lottie Lake, Alberta She currently plays third for Team Kerri Einarson. Sweeting skipped Alberta to a silver medal at the and Scotties Tournament of Hearts and won the tournament in , 2021, 2022, 2023 with Team Kerri Einarson. Career Sweeting grew up in Maryfield, Saskatchewan. In 2007, Sweeting played third for Hailey Surik's junior rink out of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The team represented Saskatchewan at the 2007 Canadian Junior Curling Championships. After posting an 8–4 record, they lost to Manitoba in a tiebreaker match. Cathy King (born September 3, 1959), formerly Cathy Borst (Cathy's married name was Borst - when she divorced she went back to her maiden name of King) is a Canadian curler from St. Albert, Alberta. She is a former Canadian champion skip and world championship bronze medallist, and 2013 world senior champion. Curling career King was a national junior champion in 1977 and 1978, before there was a women's world junior championship. In 1988, she played for Alberta at the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship, losing in the final. She has been in seven Scotties Tournament of Hearts (1995, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2005, and 2006).
