Satyaram Reang
Satyaram Reang (1943 – 2 October 2023) was an Indian folk performer and folk artist from Tripura. He was noted for his significant contribution to Hojagiri Dance. In January 2021, he was awarded India's fourth-highest civilian award the Padma Shri in the Arts category. After Thanga Darlong and Benichandra Jamatia, Satyaram Reang became the third renowned person from the indigenous Tripuri people, Tripuri community of Tripura to receive such a prestigious award. Reang was also conferred with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1986. Satyaram Reang died on 2 October 2023, at the age of 80. Tripura (princely State)
Tripura State, also known as Hill Tipperah, was a princely state in India during the period of the British Raj and for some two years after the departure of the British. Its rulers belonged to the Manikya dynasty and until August 1947 the state was in a subsidiary alliance, from which it was released by the Indian Independence Act 1947. The state acceded to the newly independent Indian Union on 13 August 1947, and subsequently merged into the Indian Union in October 1949. The princely state was located in the present-day Indian state of Tripura. The state included one town, Agartala, as well as a total of 1,463 villages. Tripuri People
The Tripuri (also known as Tripura, Tipra, Tiprasa, Twipra) are an ethnic group originating in the Indian state of Tripura. They are the inhabitants of the Twipra/Tripura Kingdom in North-East India and Bangladesh. The Tripuri people through the Manikya dynasty ruled the Kingdom of Tripura for many years until the kingdom joined the Indian Union on 15 October 1949. Sangeet Natak Akademi
Sangeet Natak Akademi (The National Academy of Music, Dance and Drama in English) is the national level academy for performing arts set up by the Government of India. History It was set up by the Indian education ministry on 31 May 1952 and became functional the following year, with the appointment of its first chairman, Dr. P. V. Rajamannar. Dr Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India, inaugurated it on 28 January 1953 in a special function held in the Parliament House. Benichandra Jamatia
Benichandra Jamatia (1930 – 14 December 2020) was a Tripuri Indian folk writer and litterateur, known for his contribution to the fields of literature, songs and education in Tripura. He is credited with introducing the ''baul'' singing tradition of West Bengal in Kokborok language for the first time. In 2020, he was awarded the Padma Shri (2020), the fourth-highest civilian award in India. He died at his home on 14 December 2020. Biography Benichandra Jamatia was born to Padasingh Jamatia and Suchitra in Maharani, Gomati District, Tripura. While he was young, his mother narrated the Puranas stories to him in the Kokborok tongue. His days were taken up by farming and cattle rearing. He was married to Durgamati Jamatia and has nine children. Thanga Darlong
Thanga Darlong (20 July 1920 – 3 December 2023) was an Indian folk music artist, known for his contribution to the folk music of Tripura and his work in preserving and promoting the traditional instrument Rosem. Biography Thanga Darlong was born in Muruai village in Tripura. He was awarded the Padma Shri (2019), the fourth highest civilian award in India. He is also a recipient of Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (2014), the highest Indian recognition given to practising artists. He is also a recipient of Academic Fellowship Award (2015), state-level Vayoshresta Samman (2016) and Centenarian Award.
