Benichandra Jamatia
Benichandra Jamatia (1930 – 14 December 2020) was a Tripuri Indian folk writer and litterateur, known for his contribution to the fields of literature, songs and education in Tripura. He is credited with introducing the ''baul'' singing tradition of West Bengal in Kokborok language for the first time. In 2020, he was awarded the Padma Shri (2020), the fourth-highest civilian award in India. He died at his home on 14 December 2020. Biography Benichandra Jamatia was born to Padasingh Jamatia and Suchitra in Maharani, Gomati District, Tripura. While he was young, his mother narrated the Puranas stories to him in the Kokborok tongue. His days were taken up by farming and cattle rearing. He was married to Durgamati Jamatia and has nine children. Tripura (princely State)
Tripura State, also known as Hill Tipperah, was a princely state in India during the period of the British Raj and for some two years after the departure of the British. Its rulers belonged to the Manikya dynasty and until August 1947 the state was in a subsidiary alliance, from which it was released by the Indian Independence Act 1947. The state acceded to the newly independent Indian Union on 13 August 1947, and subsequently merged into the Indian Union in October 1949. The princely state was located in the present-day Indian state of Tripura. The state included one town, Agartala, as well as a total of 1,463 villages. Tripuri People
The Tripuri (also known as Tripura, Tipra, Tiprasa, Twipra) are an ethnic group originating in the Indian state of Tripura. They are the inhabitants of the Twipra/Tripura Kingdom in North-East India and Bangladesh. The Tripuri people through the Manikya dynasty ruled the Kingdom of Tripura for many years until the kingdom joined the Indian Union on 15 October 1949. Gomati District
Gomati district is a district of Tripura, India. This district was created in January 2012 when four new districts were created in Tripura, taking the number of districts in the state from four to eight. Udaipur is its headquarters. The district is famous for its Mata Tripura Sundari Temple which is situated about 3 km away from Udaipur at Matabari. The temple is one of the 51 Mahapithasthans of India. The Gomati figures prominently in Tripura’s native folklore, culture, religious rites and ritual so much so that Tripuri people perform posthumous rites Geography Topographically, the Gomati district is marked by lush green and fertile Gomati valleys.
