The Damnation Of Faust (film)
''Faust aux enfers'', released in the United States as ''The Damnation of Faust'' and in Britain as ''The Condemnation of Faust'', is a 1903 French short silent film directed by Georges Méliès. Production Méliès had previously filmed two other adaptations of the Faust legend: '' Faust and Marguerite'' (1897) and '' Damnation of Faust'' (1898). The 1903 ''Damnation of Faust'' was his third version. In 1904, he would make a fourth and last straightforward adaptation, '' Faust and Marguerite'', but his later films '' The Merry Frolics of Satan'' (1905) and '' The Knight of the Snows'' (1912) are also inspired by the legend. According to Méliès's American catalogue, the direct inspiration for the 1903 version was Hector Berlioz's musical work ''La damnation de Faust''. Méliès plays Mephistopheles in the film. Frans Gösta Viktor Ekman (28 December 1890 – 12 January 1938) was a Swedish actor, director and singer. Generally spoken of as Swedish theatre's most legendary stage actor, Gösta Ekman enjoyed a prolific stage career during his short life, becoming the first real star of Swedish theatre. His boyish good looks attracted both sexes, helping to create a massive cult following and elevating him to the status of a living legend. ''Faust – A German Folktale'' (German: ) is a 1926 silent film produced by Ufa, directed by F. W. Murnau, starring Gösta Ekman as Faust, Emil Jannings as Mephisto, Camilla Horn as Gretchen/Marguerite, Frida Richard as her mother, Wilhelm Dieterle as her brother and Yvette Guilbert as Marthe Schwerdtlein, her aunt. Lyda Cini, Countess of Monselice (née Borelli, 22 March 1884 – 2 June 1959) was an Italian actress of cinema and theatre. Her career in theatre started when she was a child, acting on stage with Paola Pezzaglia in the French drama ''I due derelitti''. Biography Lyda Borelli was born on 22 March 1884, the second child to stage actors Napoleone Borelli and Cesira Banti Borelli. She had an older sister, Alda (1879–1964), who also became an actress. Grete Berger (born Margarethe Berg; 11 February 1883 – 23 May 1944) was an Austrian-German stage and film actress whose career came to an end following the rise of the Nazi Party in 1933. Berger was murdered at Auschwitz concentration camp in 1944 shortly after her arrival. Career Grete Berger was born Margarethe Berg into a Jewish family in Austrian Silesia. John Gottowt
John Gottowt (15 June 1881 – 29 August 1942) was an Austrian actor, stage director and film director for theatres and silent movies. He was born as Isidor Gesang in Lemberg, Austria-Hungary (present-day Lviv, Ukraine) into a Jewish family. After his education in Vienna, he joined the Deutsches Theater in Berlin in 1905, working for Max Reinhardt as an actor and director. Gottowt was mainly active in different theatres in Berlin as a character actor and director. Paul Wegener (11 December 1874 – 13 September 1948) was a German actor, writer, and film director known for his pioneering role in German expressionist cinema. Acting career At the age of 20, Wegener decided to end his law studies and concentrate on acting, touring the provinces before joining Max Reinhardt's acting troupe in 1906.
