Santos F.C. (South Africa)
Santos Football Club or simply Santos, also officially known under their sponsored title as Engen Santos, is a South African professional soccer club based in the Lansdowne, a suburb of the city of Cape Town. It plays in the SAFA Second Division. History The club was established in Heideveld on the Cape Flats in 1982 and was originally known as Lightbodys Santos FC, after its sponsor. During apartheid, it was renowned for the insistence on non-racial inclusivity, hence its nickname "The People's Team". They played in the Federation Professional League (FPL), the only truly non-racial football body in the country from 1982 to 1990. They won the championship in 1983/4/6/7/8/90 before joining the National Soccer League. The NSL became the PSL in 1996, with Santos earning promotion to the new league for the 1997–98 season. Chippa United
Chippa United Football Club (often known as Chilli boys or Chippa) is a South African professional football club based in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape province, having previously being based in Nyanga suburb of the city of Cape Town. The club's first team currently plays in the Premier Soccer League's Premier Division, with the reserve team playing in the PSL's reserve league. The team plays most of its home games at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, while hosting other matches at East London's Sisa Dukashe Stadium. 2011–12 National First Division
The 2011–12 National First Division, is the season from September 2011 until May 2012, of South Africa's second tier of professional football. By the end of the season, the overall NFD champion will get promoted to the first level, known as Premier Soccer League (PSL). For the first time since the 2003–04 National First Division season, all teams have been placed in one unified league table. Previously the competition had been split into two 'streams'. Summary At the conclusion of the season Tuks FC secured their promotion to the PSL after topping the table. 2011–12 Premier Soccer League
South Africa's 2011–12 Premier Soccer League season (known as the ABSA Premiership for sponsorship reasons) was the sixteenth since its establishment. Orlando Pirates were the defending champions, having won their third PSL title, and in the process ended SuperSport United's 3 year grip on the championship. The season kicked off on 12 August 2011 and ended on 19 May 2012. 16 teams contested the season, including two newly promoted teams – yo-yo club Jomo Cosmos – who were promoted for the second time in 3 seasons after winning the 2010–11 National First Division champions' playoff 5–4 on penalties against Bay United, and Black Leopards who came through a four-way promotion playoff, defeating Bay United 2–0 over a two-legged final. MTN 8 is the current branding for a South African soccer cup competition launched in 1972 for teams who finished in the top 8 positions of the league table of the country's preceding top-flight league (currently the DStv Premiership) season. The winners receive R 8 million and the competition's trophy, which is one of the three domestic trophies attainable by its competitors each soccer season, with the other two being the top-flight league title and the country's premier knock-out competition, the Nedbank Cup. Nedbank Cup
The Nedbank Cup is the current name of South Africa's premier club soccer knockout tournament. While many formats have been used over the years, the tournament has always been based on the idea of giving lower league and amateur teams a chance to compete with clubs from the top league for the cup. The tournament is based on the English FA Cup, which has become known for "giant killings" (lower league clubs defeating a top-flight club). History The tournament was started in 1971 as the Life Challenge Cup, this name stayed in place until 1975. In 1976 and 1977, the tournament was known as the Benson and Hedges Trophy. Jean-Marc Ithier
Jean-Marc Ithier (born 15 July 1965 in Rodrigues) is a retired Mauritian footballer. Besides Mauritius, he has played in South Africa. Career Ithier joined South Africa Premier Soccer League club Engen Santos from the Mauritian club Sunrise Flacq United in 1999, and played for the ''People's Team'' until his retirement in 2006. With approximately 70 goals, he is also the club's all-time leading goal-scorer. Ithier was appointed Engen Santos' caretaker coach after the departure of head coach Roger De Sa, who joined Bidvest Wits after the 06/07 season but was later replaced by David Bright of Botswana. Ithier became an assistant to the club's current head coach, Boebie Solomons. Musa Otieno
Musa Otieno (born 29 December 1973 in Nairobi) is a Kenyan former footballer. Career Club Otieno has enjoyed an illustrious career on his native continent, playing for AFC Leopards and Tusker FC in Kenya, and from 1997 until 2011 for Santos in the South African Premier Soccer League. He helped them win the PSL title in 2001-02, the Bob Save Super Bowl in 2001, the BP Top 8in 2002, and the ABSA Cup in 2003. Otieno first came to the United States in 2008, playing a season on loan with the Cleveland City Stars in the USL Second Division. Andre Leander Arendse (born 27 June 1967) is a South African former soccer player who played as a goalkeeper. He now works as an assistant and goalkeeper coach for Supersport United and has also been a co-presenter with SuperSport. Edries Burton (born 13 December 1968) is a retired South African football (soccer) defender who played professionally for Santos Cape Town, Cape Town Spurs and AmaZulu. Early life He matriculated at Belgravia High School in 1987, Lyle Lakay also matriculated at the same school. He also studied at UNISA Club career Burton joined Santos from amateur club Moonlighters AFC in 1989 and featured regularly when Santos won the Federation Professional League in 1990.
