The Santiago International Book Fair (''Spanish: Feria Internacional del Libro de Santiago, FILSA'') is an annual book fair held in Santiago, Chile, during October–December. It is organised by the Chilean Chamber for Books (''Cámara Chilena del Libro''). History The Santiago Book Fair was created in 1981 as a national event, an initiative of then mayor of Santiago, Carlos Bombal. It was originally held in Parque Forestal, behind the Chilean National Museum of Fine Arts, National Museum of Fine Arts; from 1989 it has been held in the Estación Mapocho, Estación Mapocho Cultural Center. In 1990 the event was expanded to become an international book fair and in 2011, for the first time, it featured a section dedicated to electronic books. Estación Mapocho
Estación Mapocho is a former railway station that, since 1994, has been refitted as a cultural centre that hosts many kinds of events. History The design and construction of the station began in 1905 at the hands of Emilio Jecquier, a Chilean architect based in France. The 280-metre-long, 17-metre-high structure was composed of a base of masonry and a steel vault covered in glass (now copper). The steel structure was constructed by the Belgian company Haine Saint Pierre. The official inauguration of the station took place on May 12, 1912, and the station opened to the public in 1913. Parque Forestal
Parque Forestal is an urban park in the city of Santiago, Chile. The park was created on reclaimed land from the Mapocho River and is located in the historical downtown of Santiago, west of Plaza Baquedano and east of Estación Mapocho. It is bordered on the north by Santa María Avenue, on the south by Merced Street and Ismael Valdés Vergara Street. At its eastern end, the park becomes Balmaceda Park, forming an almost unbroken stretch of greenery along the Mapocho River. The park contains the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, which is housed in the same building as the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo. Palacio Bruna is opposite the park on Merced Street. The Chilean National Museum of Fine Arts ( es, Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes or ), located in Santiago, Chile, is one of the major centers for Chilean art and for broader South American art.
