Santa Ninfa Dei Crociferi
The Church of Saint Nympha (Italian: Chiesa di Santa Ninfa or Santa Ninfa dei Crociferi) is a Baroque-Mannerist church of Palermo. The facade rises on Via Maqueda, a block north of the central intersection known as the Quattro Canti, in the quarter of Seralcadi, within the historic centre of Palermo. The church belongs to the Camillians (also known as ''"Crociferi"''). History The church is dedicated to one of the female patron saints of Palermo: Ninfa or Nympha who had lived in Palermo was putatively martyred for her faith in the 4th century. It is one of the first buildings erected after the opening of Via Maqueda, the second most important street of the city. The order of the Camillians had been founded by the later canonized Camillus de Lellis in 1582, and rapidly spread throughout Italy. Guglielmo Borremans or Guglielmo Fiamingo (1670–1744) was a Flemish painter whose documented career took principally place in Italy, in particular Naples, Cosenza and Sicily. Here he was one of the pre-eminent late-Baroque fresco painters of the first half of the 17th century who received multiple commissions to decorate churches and palaces. Gaspare Serenario
Gaspare Serenario ( Palermo, Sicily 1707–1759) was an Italian painter, active mainly in a grand late Baroque style. Biography As a youth, he moved to Rome, where he lived for over thirty years. Along with the fellow Sicilian Olivio Sozzi, Serenario trained under Sebastiano Conca, then the pre-eminent studio in Rome. Serenario was named knight of the Order of the Congregazione Pontificia dei Virtuosi al Pantheon. He returns to Palermo where he completes the cycle of decorations for the church of Santa Rosalia and completes frescos for Palazzo Mazzarino. Gioacchino Martorana
Gioacchino Martorana (19 August 1736 – 27 November 1779) was a Sicilian painter. He was the son of Pietro Martorana and a member of an extended family of decorators and artists from Palermo. Martorana was born in Palermo, in the Mediterranean island of Sicily. When he was seventeen he went to Rome to study under his father's former pupil Giuseppe Vasi, and also spent time with Marco Benefial. He remained in Rome until the 1770s. He painted many religious subjects; much of his work shows the influence of Sebastiano Conca and of Pompeo Girolamo Batoni. After his return to Palermo he painted a number of portraits, including one of the Sicilian architect Giuseppe Venanzio Marvuglia. He painted frescoes in several palaces of the city, among them Palazzo Comitini, Palazzo Costantino and Palazzo Butera.
