Sands Directory
The Sands Directories, also published as the Sands and Kenny Directory and the Sands and McDougall Directory were annual publications in Australia. They listed household, business, society, and Government contacts in Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney including some rural areas of Victoria and New South Wales from the 1850s. City directories are an important resource for historical research, allowing individual addresses and occupations to be linked to specific streets and suburbs. Publisher John Sands (1818-1873) was an engraver, printer and stationer. Born in England he moved to Sydney in 1837. Sands formed several business partnerships, in 1851 with his brother-in-law Thomas Kenny, and in 1860 with Dugald McDougall with the business being known as Sands, Kenny & Co. A gazetteer is a geographical index or directory used in conjunction with a map or atlas.Aurousseau, 61. The ''New South Wales Post Office Directory'', also known as Wise's Directories or Wise's Street Directories, was published in Sydney, Australia. The directory was published from 1886 to 1950. History The directory was published every two years until 1900, when it became an annual publication. The directory was originally published by Wise, Caffin & Co. The directories provided information by locality, individual surname, government service, and by trade or profession. Early publications included a street directory for Sydney and its suburbs, and this later expanded to include Newcastle and West Maitland. John Sands (company)
John Sands is an Australian printing company and former distributor of games and computer hardware that is now a wholly owned subsidiary of American Greetings. In 1851, John Sands and Thomas Kenny founded Sands and Kenny in Sydney. The firm later became Sands, Kenny & Co., and then John Sands Ltd.
