The Sandakan District ( ms, Daerah Sandakan) is an administrative district in the Malaysian state of Sabah, part of the Sandakan Division which includes the districts of Beluran, Kinabatangan, Sandakan, Telupid and Tongod. The capital of the district is in Sandakan City. Demographics Sandakan district is the third largest of Sabah's 25 districts, with 396,290 inhabitants after Kota Kinabalu and Tawau. Districts (Malay: '' Daerah''; ''Jajahan'' in Kelantan) are a type of administrative division below the state level in Malaysia. An administrative district is administered by a lands and district office (''pejabat daerah dan tanah'') which is headed by district officer (''pegawai daerah''). Kinabatangan District
The Kinabatangan District ( ms, Daerah Kinabatangan) is an administrative district in the Malaysian state of Sabah, part of the Sandakan Division which includes the districts of Beluran, Kinabatangan, Sandakan, Telupid and Tongod. The capital of the district is in Kinabatangan Town. Etymology The name Kinabatangan was originally called "Cinabatangan" which means a long river by a Chinese settlement governor in the area named Ong Sum Ping who had arrived to the area in the 16th century. It is believed that the name of Kampung Mumiang, Sukau and Bilit located in the district also comes from the Chinese language. History Kinabatangan was already used by the locals as recorded in the books of French authors in 1782 and 1837, long before the arrival of Chinese immigrants to the area. The University of California operates the largest academic library system in the world. It manages more than 40.8 million print volumes in 100 libraries on ten campuses. The purpose of these libraries is to assist research and instruction on the University of California campuses. While each campus library is separate, they share (through the UC library system) facilities for storage, computerized indexing, digital libraries and management. Puu Jih Shih Temple
Puu Jih Shih Temple ( zh, 普济寺) is a Buddhist temple located at the hilltop of Tanah Merah at Sandakan Bay in Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia. The temple was built in 1987 and officiated by Joseph Pairin Kitingan, the Chief Minister of Sabah at the time. It is the largest Chinese temple for the town and situated around 4 kilometres west of the town centre. The temple was featured in the American television series of The Amazing Race 4 in 2003. Sandakan District Mosque
The Sandakan District Mosque (Malay: Masjid Daerah Sandakan or also known as Masjid Besar Sim-Sim) is a mosque in Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia. Built in 1985 and completed in 1989, it is the main mosque for the district of Sandakan. The mosque was officially opened in 1990. In 2016, the mosque was visited by the Crown Prince of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail. Tawau District
The Tawau District ( ms, Daerah Tawau) is an administrative district in the Malaysian state of Sabah, part of the Tawau Division which also includes the districts of Kunak, Lahad Datu, Semporna and Tawau. The capital of the district is in Tawau Town. History The administration of Tawau changed several times in the course of its history. Kota Kinabalu District
The Kota Kinabalu District ( ms, Daerah Kota Kinabalu) is an administrative district in the Malaysian state of Sabah, part of the West Coast Division which includes the districts of Kota Belud, Kota Kinabalu, Papar, Penampang, Putatan, Ranau and Tuaran. The capital of the district is in Kota Kinabalu City. Demographics According to the 2010 census, the population of the district was 462,963. The main ethnic groups were the Chinese (20%), Kadazan-Dusun (15%), Bajaus (16%), Malays (8%) and Muruts (6%). As in most other parts of Sabah, there was also a significant number of illegal immigrants from the southern Philippines - mainly from the Sulu Archipelago and Mindanao - many of whom are not included in the population statistics. Tongod District, Malaysia
The Tongod District ( ms, Daerah Tongod) is an administrative district in the Malaysian state of Sabah, part of the Sandakan Division which includes the districts of Beluran, Kinabatangan, Sandakan, Telupid and Tongod. The capital of the district is in Tongod Town. History The district was first established in 1977 as a sub-district of the Kinabatangan district. The "daerah kecil" ("small district") was entrusted to Keningau's Charles Andau, who was an assistant district officer and formally subordinate to the district officer of the Kinabatangan district. On 1 March 1999, Tongod was raised to become an independent district. On 24 May 1999, Major Matthew Sator of Ranau was appointed to be the first district officer. Telupid District
The Telupid District ( ms, Daerah Telupid) is an administrative district in the Malaysian state of Sabah, part of the Sandakan Division which includes the districts of Beluran, Kinabatangan, Sandakan and Tongod. The capital of the district is in Telupid Town. The district is formerly a part of Beluran District. History Telupid was firstly settled around 1940s and became the major route for the Sandakan Death Marches during World War II. At the time, it was mainly inhabited by the Dusun people. The Beluran District ( ms, Daerah Beluran) is an administrative district in the Malaysian state of Sabah, part of the Sandakan Division which includes the districts of Beluran, Kinabatangan, Sandakan, Telupid and Tongod. The capital of the district is in Beluran Town. Etymology The name Beluran was taken after the name of a hill in the district.
