Sanctuary Asia
''Sanctuary Asia'' is an Indian nature and wildlife conservation magazine founded in 1981 by Bittu Sahgal, its current editor. The magazine expanded in 2015 to become established as a non-profit foundation (Sanctuary Nature Foundation). Sanctuary Nature Foundation also publishes other conservation-focused reading material, like coffee table books and national park guides. History Editor Bittu Sahgal founded the magazine ''Sanctuary Asia'' in 1981 at the suggestion of Fateh Singh Rathore, the Field Director of Ranthambore National Park, urging him to educate the Indian citizen on the importance of wildlife conservation. After receiving support nationwide, a second magazine was launched in 1984 for a younger audience, ''Sanctuary Cub''. Bittu Sahgal
Bittu Sahgal is an environmental activist, writer, and the founder of Sanctuary Nature Foundation, an Indian nonprofit conservation organization that works on environmental policy, advocacy, science, on-ground support and habitat management. He is also the founding editor of ''Sanctuary Asia'', a wildlife and ecology magazine. Early life Sahgal was born on 12 October 1947 in Shimla, where he attended from Bishop Cotton High School. He graduated with a B.Com from St Xavier's College, Kolkata. He worked at a chartered accountancy firm during this time. He resigned later and moved to Mumbai, where he currently lives. Belinda Wright (conservationist)
Belinda Anne Irene Wright (born 1953) is a prominent wild life photographer and wildlife conservationist in India. She is the Executive Director of the Wildlife Protection Society of India (WPSI). Parents Belinda's mother Anne Wright is a founder trustee of World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) India, which she helped set up in the late 1960s. She was a member of the Tiger Task Force that was commissioned by the late Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, to select nine tiger reserves for the launch of Project Tiger in 1973. Ravi Sankaran
Ravi Sankaran (4 October 1963 – 17 January 2009) was an Indian ornithologist whose work concerned the conservation of several threatened birds of India. He was the Director of the Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. Education Ravi studied at the Rishi Valley School, Madanapalli, Andhra Pradesh. Madhaviah Krishnan
Madhaviah Krishnan (30 June 1912 – 18 February 1996), better known as M. Krishnan, was a pioneering Indian wildlife photographer, writer and naturalist. Early life M. Krishnan was born in Tirunelveli on 30 June 1912 and was the youngest of eight siblings. His father was a Tamil writer and reformer A. Madhaviah who worked with the Salt and Abkari Department of the Government of Madras. His father's writings included one of the first realistic Tamil novels, '' Padmavathi Charithram'' published in 1898 and an English novel '' Thillai Govindan'' published in 1916. Sunderlal Bahuguna Ji (9 January 1927 – 21 May 2021) was an Indian environmentalist and Chipko movement leader. The idea of the Chipko movement was suggested by his wife and him. He fought for the preservation of forests in the Himalayas, first as a member of the Chipko movement in the 1970s, and later spearheaded the anti-Tehri Dam movement from the 1980s to early 2004. He was one of the early environmentalists of India, and later he and others associated with the Chipko movement and started taking up wider environmental issues, such as being opposed to large dams. Kailash Sankhala
Kailash Sankhala (30 January 1925 – 15 August 1994) was an Indian biologist and conservationist. He was the Director of Delhi Zoological Park and Chief Wildlife Warden of Rajasthan. He is best known for his work in preserving tigers. Sankhala was the first Director of Project Tiger, a conservation programme set up in India in 1973. He was well known as "The Tiger Man of India". He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1992 and Rajasthan Ratan in 2013. Wildlife manager Sankhala started at the Forest Service in 1953. Hemendra Singh Panwar
Hemendra Singh Panwar is an Indian conservationist and civil servant, known for his efforts in the fields of wildlife and conservation. He was the first director of the Wildlife Institute of India and was the director of ''Project Tiger''.
