Sanctuarium
The Sanctuarium is a columbarium situated along Gregorio Araneta Avenue in Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines. History The Sanctuarium was established in 2006. Initially, only 18 percent of the Sanctuarium's patrons preferred cremation over traditional burial but by 2012, it was reported that this figure rose to 60 percent. The Sanctuarium is one of the biggest columbariums in Asia, with its current capacity housing 25,000 vaults. Almost half of this figure has already been sold and as of 2012, the establishment already inters 2,000 remains. Facilities The Sanctuarium is hosted inside a 12-storey building with 4 basement parking levels. It hosts 28 vigil chapels, a cafe called the Genki Japanesque Café, and a flower shop. Gregorio Araneta Avenue is a suburban arterial road in the Santa Mesa Heights area of Quezon City, northeastern Metro Manila, Philippines. It is a 6- to 8-lane divided avenue designated as part of Circumferential Road 3 (C-3) and physical continuation of Sergeant Rivera Street which travels from Santo Domingo Avenue at its north end near Balintawak in Quezon City, and meets N. Columbarium
A columbarium (; pl. columbaria) is a structure for the reverential and usually public storage of funerary urns, holding cremated remains of the deceased. The term can also mean the nesting boxes of pigeons. The term comes from the Latin "'' columba''" (dove) and, originally, solely referred to compartmentalized housing for doves and pigeons called a dovecote. Background Roman columbaria were often built partly or completely underground. The Columbarium of Pomponius Hylas is an ancient Roman example, rich in frescoes, decorations, and precious mosaics. Today's columbaria can be either free standing units, or part of a mausoleum or another building. Some manufacturers produce columbaria that are built entirely off-site and brought to the cemetery by a large truck. Many modern crematoria have columbaria.
