San Paolo, Bologna
San Paolo Maggiore, also known as San Paolo Decollato, is a Baroque-style, Roman Catholic basilica church located on Via Carbonari #18 in Bologna, region of Emilia-Romagna, Italy. History The church was commissioned between 1606 and 1611 by the Barnabites from the architect Ambrogio Magenta or Mazenta. Patronage for this church was mainly derived from the Prince Virgilio Spada, brother of Cardinal Bernardino Spada. The Barnabites, also known as the ''Clerics Regular of St Paul'', named this church as ''Maggiore'' to distinguish it from two other San Paolo's in Bologna. Between 1634 and 1636 the facade was built to designs by Ercole Fichi. The facade, in brick and stone, has statues of ''St Peter'' and ''Paul'', respectively by Domenico Maria Mirandola and G. Cruventi. During the Napoleonic invasion, the Barnabites were suppressed, and the church was made a parish church in 1819. Closed again later, it was reconsecrated in 1878. Antonio Rolli
Antonio Rolli or Roli (1643–1695) is an Italian painter active painting quadrature during the Baroque period, mainly in his native Bologna. Biography He trained with Angelo Michele Colonna and worked alongside his brother ''Giuseppe'' or ''Gioseffo Maria Rolli'' (1645-1727), who painted the figures. He painted the ceiling (1695) for the church of San Paolo Maggiore, Bologna. He died from a fall from a scaffold while completing this work. Paolo Guidi and his brother Gioseffo (or Giuseppe) helped complete the work. He helped decorate the oratory of Santa Maria della Neve, Bologna. Lucio Massari
Lucio Massari (22 January 1569 – 3 November 1633) was an Italian painter of the School of Bologna. He can be described as painting during both Mannerist and early-Baroque periods. Life and work He was born in Bologna, where he initially apprenticed with an unknown painter by the name of Spinelli, then the Mannerist painter Bartolomeo Passarotti, but also worked with Bartolomeo Cesi. In 1592, he joined the Carracci studio or the ''Academy of the Incamminati'', and remained attached to Ludovico Carracci for many years. In 1604, he worked with Ludovico to fresco ''Stories of San Mauro, San Benedetto and others'' in the cloister of San Michele in Bosco. Giacomo Cavedoni
Giacomo Cavedone (also called ''Giacomo Cavedoni'') (1577–1660) was an Italian Baroque painter of the Bolognese School. Life He belonged to the generation of Carracci-inspired or trained painters that included Giovanni Andrea Donducci (Mastelletta); Alessandro Tiarini, Lucio Massari, Leonello Spada and Lorenzo Garbieri. He was born in Sassuolo, near Modena, and was able to obtain a three-year stipend to apprentice with Bernardino Baldi and Annibale Carracci. In the autumn of 1609, he sojourned in Rome for a year to work under Guido Reni, and is known to have worked in Venice from 1612 to 1613. Lodovico Carracci
Ludovico (or Lodovico) Carracci (21 April 1555 – 13 November 1619) was an Italian, early-Baroque painter, etcher, and printmaker born in Bologna. His works are characterized by a strong mood invoked by broad gestures and flickering light that create spiritual emotion and are credited with reinvigorating Italian art, especially fresco art, which was subsumed with formalistic Mannerism. Giuseppe Maria Crespi (March 14, 1665 – July 16, 1747), nicknamed Lo Spagnuolo ("The Spaniard"), was an Italian late Baroque painter of the Bolognese School. His eclectic output includes religious paintings and portraits, but he is now most famous for his genre paintings. Alessandro Algardi (July 31, 1598 – June 10, 1654) was an Italian high-Baroque sculptor active almost exclusively in Rome, where for the latter decades of his life, he was, along with Francesco Borromini and Pietro da Cortona, one of the major rivals of Gian Lorenzo Bernini. He is now most admired for his portrait busts that have great vivacity and dignity. Giuseppe Antonio Caccioli (October 18, 1672 – July 20, 1740) was an Italian painter of the Baroque period. Biography Giuseppe Antonio Caccioli was born in Bologna.
