San Luis Río Colorado is a municipality in the Mexican state of Sonora in northwestern Mexico, covering an area of 8412.75 km2. The municipality is the location of the city of San Luis Rio Colorado, the community of El Golfo de Santa Clara, and the Bahia Adair biosphere preserve. Geography The municipality is in the Lower Colorado River Valley, with the Colorado River along its west, the U.S.-Mexico border along the north, and to the Colorado River Delta on the southwest, and the Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez) along the south. Ogden's Landing was a steamboat landing and woodyard, owned by former Colorado River ferry partner of George Alonzo Johnson, supplying wood to the steamboats on the lower Colorado River in Sonora, Mexico, from the mid 1854 to the late 1870s. Lerdo Landing
Lerdo Landing, now a ghost town, in Baja California was originally located in Sonora, Mexico from 1872 to 1896. Later changes to the course of the Colorado river and political boundaries left the site located in Baja California. Lerdo Landing was a steamboat landing for the settlement of Colonia Lerdo that was established on the east side of the Colorado River. It was originally served by steamboats of George Alonzo Johnson's Colorado Steam Navigation Company until the Southern Pacific Railroad reached Yuma, Arizona, in 1877 and bought out the steamboat company. The railroad company shut down its steamboat operations at Port Isabel, Sonora and ceased traffic on the river below Yuma. Hualapai Smith's or Smith's Ferry was a steamboat landing and a ferry crossing and farm on the Sonora bank of the Colorado River, the border between Sonora and Baja California, from the later 1860s to 1878. It was located on the Colorado River in Sonora 20 miles overland from Yuma, Arizona and 30 miles down river from Fort Yuma in 1861. Hualapai Smith's was named after the proprietor, J. L. Colonia Lerdo
Colonia Lerdo, a ghost town located in San Luis Río Colorado Municipality, Sonora, Mexico, was founded as an agricultural colony in 1872 by entrepreneur Thomas H. Blythe and Mexican Gen. Guillermo Andrade. Lerdo Landing was located 80 miles up the Colorado River from its mouth, and Lerdo was located just east of the river landing on a mesa. Lerdo was described as having streets lined with Eucalyptus trees. The colony was intended to grow and harvest the wild hemp that grew over much of the Colorado River Delta. They also experimented with growing cotton and raised corn and other vegetables for their own use. Colonia Lerdo at first populated by 73 persons eventually grew to more than 500 people. Steamboats Of The Colorado River
Steamboats on the Colorado River operated from the river mouth at the Colorado River Delta on the Gulf of California in Mexico, up to the Virgin River on the Lower Colorado River Valley in the Southwestern United States from 1852 until 1909, when the construction of the Laguna Dam was completed.
