It is located in the central part of the country, and borders (clockwise beginning in the north) the provinces of Alajuela, Heredia, Limón, Cartago and Puntarenas. Puriscal is the 4th canton in the province of San José, Costa Rica. The head city of the canton is Santiago. Toponymy In Spanish, a is the flower of the common bean. A is a field of flowering beans. Chucás River delineates the canton's northernmost boundary, while the Chires River marks its far southern border, with the canton of Parrita in Puntarenas Province. Alajuelita is a canton in the San José province of Costa Rica. History Alajuelita was created on 4 June 1909 by decree 58. The first settlements in the area occurred by 1650. The name "Alajuelita" comes from a diminutive form of the name of Alajuela Province due to original settlers coming from that province. Geography Alajuelita has an area of km² and a mean elevation of metres. The odd-shaped canton reaches southwest from the suburbs of the national capital city of San José. It is delineated by the Tiribí River on the northeast, Cañas River on the east, Poás River on the southeast, and the Cerros de Escazú at it far southwestern end. Santa Ana is a district and head city of the Santa Ana canton, in the San José province of Costa Rica. The city acts as seat to the municipal government of the Santa Ana Canton. Santa Ana (canton)
Santa Ana is the ninth canton in the San José province of Costa Rica. It is located in the Central Valley. The canton borders the Alajuela canton to the north, the Mora canton to the south and west, the Escazú canton to the east, as well as the Belén canton to the north east. The canton has the highest Human Development Index of any canton in Costa Rica as of 2021 with a HDI of 0.935. Toponymy The first mention of the name appears in the Protocols of Cartago on December 1, 1658, when part of the land which now conforms the canton became property of José de Alvarado and Petronilla de Retes after their marriage. The name of the lands comes from the original owner of the lands, Jerónimo de Retes y López de Ortega, father of Petronilla.
